Before the TV prequel Welcome to Derry came out, the creators promised fans wouldn’t see Pennywise, the terrifying clown form of the evil in Derry, right away. Pennywise had already become famous in the It movies from 2017 and 2019, and getting Bill Skarsgård to play him again was a key requirement for making the show.

As the series continued, Pennywise became less present. The creature emerged from the sewers of Derry, but mostly appeared as frightening illusions designed to scare specific characters. While the updated version of It looked impressive, viewers kept waiting for Pennywise to make a sudden, terrifying appearance. When the clown finally showed up, he delivered his signature laugh and distorted voice.

Pennywise’s role in the show feels comparable to the movies, though he appears less frequently in the films.
