Macaulay Culkin Shares Heartbreaking Message About Being a Dad

Macaulay Culkin never wants his kids to feel like they’re alone.

That’s why Macaulay Culkin is dedicated to making sure his sons, Dakota, 4, and Carson, 3, feel loved as much as possible, along with his partner Brenda Song.

He mentioned on the December 16th episode of Mythical Kitchen that he makes a point of saying ‘proud’ to his family. He explained he didn’t hear that word often enough growing up, so he wants to make sure his own children know he’s proud of them.

Macaulay Culkin had a challenging relationship with his father, Christopher “Kit” Culkin, growing up. Despite achieving success as an actor, he says he rarely heard the word ‘Dad’ as a child. Now 45, he plans to use the term often with his own kids.

“My kid, he does his recital,” Macaulay recalled of a specific instance. “As soon as the curtain opens, he freezes, he cries and he runs off stage. So, I go and scoop him up and the first thing out of my mouth is, ‘Man, I’m so proud of you. You were so brave to go out there like that.'”

Macaulay observed that trauma can be passed down through families and affect people for years. He also expressed happiness with how things have gone as a father.

“I’m proud of myself,” he continued, “that I can provide for my family in that kind of way.”

The actor attributes a lot of his approach to parenting to Brenda, whom he began dating in 2017 after they appeared together in the film Changeland.

He shared that Brenda is a wonderful mother and inspires him to be a better parent and individual. Seeing her dedication and how joyful their children are fills him with admiration.

As for where Macaulay and his own father stand today? The pair are still estranged.

Oh my gosh, I nearly fainted when I heard him talk about this on Sibling Revelry last month! He said it’s been, like, thirty years – thirty years! – since he’s spoken to him. And then, get this, he added, ‘He deserves it, too!’ Can you believe it? It just… it broke my heart, but also, I totally get it. He’s amazing, and if he says that’s how it has to be, I support him one hundred percent. I’ve been replaying that moment in my head ever since!

Back in April 2018, Brenda excitedly shared that she recorded a podcast with her boyfriend and a close friend, both of whom she admires. She tagged their podcast, @bunnyearspodcast, and her boyfriend, @mattbennett, in the post.

The famous couple showed their support for cancer research by attending the Stand Up To Cancer event in Los Angeles in 2018.
