Hideo Kojima, director of the upcoming horror game OD from Kojima Productions, has suggested that viewers watch the game’s September “Knock” trailer repeatedly – up to 100 times – to uncover a key clue about the story. In an interview with Nikkei Xtrend (reported by GamesRadar), Kojima also stated that OD will be a uniquely different kind of media experience.
Kojima explained that when people first experience Death Stranding, it can feel like a horror game. However, he emphasized that the game’s underlying system is unique. While built using a game engine, it functions in a way that’s unlike any other game, which led the team to collaborate with Microsoft to create a completely new form of entertainment.
He explained he couldn’t share many specifics because he didn’t want to upset Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming. However, he mentioned the “Knock” trailer contains several clues about what OD is, particularly a significant hint at the very end with the phrase “for all players and screamers.”
He wouldn’t reveal more, saying he’d get in trouble with Phil Spencer. However, he suggested there’s a clue hidden within the teaser trailer. While he wouldn’t say what it is, he pointed out that the trailer ends with the phrase ‘for all players and screamers,’ which he believes is a significant hint.
Earlier this month, Kojima shared his concerns about his new project, OD, admitting he wasn’t sure if it would succeed. While he’s created unusual games before, such as the delivery-focused Death Stranding, he explained that OD will involve a complete overhaul of how the game is serviced and played. The specifics of this change remain unclear.
He admitted they’re still figuring things out and aren’t sure if their new approach will succeed. While their previous games – stealth and delivery titles – were innovative in gameplay, they used standard game systems. This new project is different; they’re completely rethinking how the game works as a service, which will be a significant challenge. He also hinted that the recently released trailer contains clues, encouraging viewers to study it closely to uncover the details.
The first trailer for “Knock,” released in September, showed gameplay footage. It’s set ten years after a frightening event, and features the main character, Sophia Lillis, receiving a card instructing her to celebrate by lighting fires. The trailer shows her entering a room filled with candles and beginning to do just that.
As she lights the candles, unsettling events begin to occur. She hears a baby crying, and a knocking at the door grows increasingly loud. The door then swings open, revealing an unknown presence that enters the room. The scene cuts to black just as this presence reaches for Lillis’s face.
OD doesn’t yet have a release date. It is expected to come out on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
