Hideo Kojima, the game designer behind unique titles like Death Stranding and Boktai, recently discussed the inevitable role of AI in our future. In an interview with Nikkei Xtrend (reported by GamesRadar), Kojima explained that AI is rapidly developing, much like smartphones were when they first appeared. He pointed out that while smartphones weren’t immediately ubiquitous, they quickly became essential, and he anticipates a similar trajectory for AI technology.
Hideo Kojima pointed out that smartphones were initially criticized, but now many people rely on them daily. He believes AI will follow a similar path. Instead of dismissing AI as pointless or trying to stop its development, Kojima argues that we should focus on using technology to improve our lives, as turning back isn’t an option – just like with smartphones.
Kojima suggests that AI could help people who struggle with in-person interactions connect with others more easily. He believes this technology has the power to significantly alter how we communicate as humans.
I’ve been thinking a lot about how AI could really change the way we connect with people. It’s interesting because some of us aren’t naturally comfortable with face-to-face conversations, and it’s cool to imagine AI helping us bridge that gap and actually build closer relationships. It would definitely make things easier, wouldn’t it?
Kojima’s pointed out that while this tech is cool, it could mess with how we actually talk to each other. He thinks we need to be careful and set some boundaries for ourselves. He said he worries we’d become too reliant on it, so maybe we should limit how much we use AI, or even have ‘AI-free’ days to stay connected to each other the old-fashioned way.
During the same interview, Kojima also discussed his next horror game, OD. He explained he couldn’t share many specifics, but hinted that while the game appears to be a horror title, its underlying mechanics are unique and unconventional.
He explained that when people first encounter OD, it can seem frightening. However, the technology behind it is unique. It’s built using a game engine, which offers a familiar framework, but functions in a completely different way than a typical game. This is why they collaborated with Microsoft to create an entirely new form of media.
He appears to have included some hidden clues within the September release of the “Knock” trailer. He’s encouraged viewers to watch it repeatedly – even up to 100 times – to discover a major hint about the plot of OD.
Look, I’m kinda walking a tightrope here – Phil Spencer would have my hide if I said too much! But honestly, if you’ve been replaying the teaser trailer like I have, there’s a clue hidden in there. I can’t tell you what it is, but seriously, watch it a ton of times. And pay attention to the very end – it says ‘for all players and screamers’. That’s a pretty big hint, trust me.
OD is being developed for PC and Xbox Series X/S. It doesn’t yet have a release date, however.
