One common complaint about Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is its inconsistent storyline. The anime and manga tell the same basic story, but they have significant differences that don’t always line up, leading to arguments about which version is the official one.
The storyline for Boruto has always been a bit complicated. However, because the original creator, Masashi Kishimoto, is now more involved with the manga version, many fans consider the manga to be the official story and the anime a separate, non-official version. The latest chapter of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex has reinforced this idea, but the situation isn’t quite as simple as some believe.
Does Boruto: Two Blue Vortex’s Latest Reveal Destroy The Anime?

I’ve noticed a big problem with the Boruto anime’s storyline revolves around Boruto’s Jogan ability. It’s shown up a lot, especially in arcs that are only in the anime, but it’s always been confusing whether he’s actually using it in the manga when his eye turns white. It feels disconnected, like the anime and manga aren’t always on the same page with this power.
The problem with Boruto’s Jogan has become even more apparent in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 29. When Mamushi attacked the village, Boruto activated his Byakugan – not the Jogan. This strongly suggests that the manga is now primarily using the Byakugan instead of the Jogan, especially as seen in the flash-forward depicting his fight with Kawaki.
Okay, so the Jogan is really cool – it lets me spot bad intentions and even open portals! But honestly, a lot of what it does feels like stuff the Byakugan already handles, like being able to see chakra networks. It’s almost like Boruto could just unlock a more powerful version of the Byakugan instead of having this separate, unique Jogan jutsu. It just feels more logical at this point in the story, you know?
While it’s heavily implied Boruto is using Momoshiki’s power to activate his Byakugan, if he truly has access to the dojutsu, it would be more logical for the story to focus on that. Introducing the Jogan as official canon seems unlikely, especially since it’s never been mentioned in the manga itself.
Boruto’s Continuity Has Already Been A Mess For Years

Boruto’s use of the Byakugan creating problems with the Jogan isn’t a new development for the series. The anime and manga generally tell the same story, and it seems events shown only in the anime likely happen between the panels of the manga, as hinted at in earlier chapters.
It’s not quite that straightforward. Although the anime and manga share the same basic storyline, they often present conflicting details. For instance, Sumire’s character and powers differ between the two, and the character Urashiki Otsutsuki appears in the anime but not in the manga, even within manga-adapted story arcs.
Ideally, the Boruto anime and manga should follow a similar pattern to Dragon Ball Super, where the manga offers a unique interpretation of the anime’s events. However, Boruto’s anime and manga are meant to be telling the same story, so inconsistencies between the two are much more apparent and problematic.
From minor inconsistencies to major plot holes, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations has consistently struggled with continuity, and rarely attempts to fix these issues. The recent debate surrounding Boruto’s use of the Byakugan and Jogan is just the newest example, and it’s probably not the last we’ll see.
Boruto’s Messy Continuity Is The Franchise’s Biggest Problem

The storyline of Boruto has been consistently confusing, and this is a major problem for the series. Typically, with long-running anime, viewers only have to worry about occasional filler episodes. However, Boruto doesn’t clearly define what’s part of the official story and what isn’t, making it hard to know which episodes are truly important to follow.
These problems really compound the existing issues with the Boruto series. From the start, it’s been considered a weak sequel to Naruto due to its uneven pacing, disappointing fight scenes, and inconsistent character development for both returning and new faces. The fact that it’s often unclear what’s officially part of the story only makes these flaws stand out even more.
Even if fixing the timeline inconsistencies in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations wouldn’t solve all of its story problems, it would definitely improve how fans feel about the series. Hopefully, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex will begin by addressing the confusion around Boruto’s use of both the Byakugan and the Jogan.
