The multiple versions released of the original Blade Runner show how complicated its story was. Director Ridley Scott, fresh off the success of Alien, created a unique blend of science fiction and film noir, combining detective story elements with a futuristic world.
First released in 1982, the film Blade Runner was based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? but wasn’t a commercial success. Its 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049, directed by Dennis Villeneuve, also struggled financially, earning $276 million despite costing over $180 million to make.
Both Blade Runner Movies Were Box Office Flops
When Blade Runner first came out, many critics didn’t quite know what to make of it. However, over time, the film gained a reputation as a groundbreaking and influential work of science fiction, and it felt natural to create a sequel. While Blade Runner 2049 didn’t perform well at the box office, critics generally responded to it positively.
When it first came out, director Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up film received positive reviews, but didn’t connect with moviegoers. However, the new Prime Video series, Blade Runner 2099, will continue the story, and aims to address a long-standing issue with the franchise. The series will star Michelle Yeoh, Hunter Schafer, and Tom Burke.
The new series, Blade Runner: 2099, has a good chance of succeeding where Blade Runner: 2049 struggled financially. Because it’s a streaming show, it won’t face the same immediate pressure to perform at the box office. Plus, the series is making a smart choice with how it develops the story.
Blade Runner 2099 Can Slowly Win Over Audiences
Unlike Blade Runner 2049, which heavily relied on the story and style of the first Blade Runner, Blade Runner: 2099 will forge its own path and move beyond the original film’s narrative.

I’m really excited about Blade Runner: 2099! Michelle Yeoh is playing Olwen, a replicant who’s lived a long life, and it feels like a totally new take on that universe. What I especially love is that because it’s a longer story, it has the chance to really draw you in. The original movies had to cram so much world-building into a short amount of time, but this one can take its time and let the story unfold naturally.
TV Might Be The Best Medium For Blade Runner Stories
The new Prime Video series could actually show that television is the perfect format for the Blade Runner story. While the Blade Runner films didn’t immediately connect with viewers, the show, Blade Runner: 2099, will have an advantage – its longer, more detailed story won’t face the same initial pressure when it premieres in 2026.
