Despicable Me and Minions Franchise Passes Huge Box Office Milestone

As a huge fan of the Despicable Me franchise, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the success of Despicable Me 4 at the box office. With over $400 million earned worldwide in just its second weekend, it’s no wonder that this animated film is making history as the highest-grossing animated franchise ever, surpassing a total of $5 billion.

Last week, I was thrilled to witness the release of Despicable Me 4 in theaters. The opening weekend was impressive with strong sales at the box office, and by the time the holiday weekend rolled around, it had raked in an amazing $120 million. As we enter its second weekend, the animated film continues to dominate the charts, looking set to claim first place once again. Surpassing the horror flick Longlegs. The success of Despicable Me and its spin-off series, Minions, has reached new heights. With a combined box office total of over $5 billion, we’ve made history as the highest-grossing animated franchise ever.

The upcoming release of Despicable Me 4 is projected to conclude the weekend with a robust performance, boosting its global earnings to an estimated $441 million. According to Box Office Mojo’s records, the original Despicable Me film grossed $543.2 million worldwide, while Despicable Me 2 earned a staggering $970.8 million and Despicable Me 3 raked in an impressive $1.035 billion. In terms of the Minion spin-offs, Minions amassed $1.16 billion globally, and Minions: The Rise of Gru added $940.2 million to the franchise’s earnings. Domestically, both the Despicable Me and Minions series rank as the 10th highest-grossing film franchises in history.

What Is Despicable Me 4 About?

Despicable Me and Minions Franchise Passes Huge Box Office Milestone

After the massive success of Illumination’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru” in 2022, which grossed nearly $1 billion globally and set the record as the biggest animated franchise in history, comes the next installment. In this new chapter, we meet Gru (Oscar-nominated Steve Carell) and Lucy (Oscar-nominated Kristen Wiig), along with their daughters Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Madison Polan). The peaceful family life is disrupted when a new addition to the Gru clan arrives: Gru Junior, who has a mischievous plan to give his father a hard time.

In a fresh twist, Gru encounters new adversaries: Emmy-winning actor Will Ferrell as Maxime Le Mal and Emmy-nominated actress Sofia Vergara as Valentina. Consequently, the family is compelled to flee from their usual surroundings.

As a big fan, I’d describe it this way: In this captivating production, Joey King (“Bullet Train”) brings her unique charm to newly introduced characters, while Emmy-winning Stephen Colbert (“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”) adds his wit and humor. Chloe Fineman (“Saturday Night Live”) also joins the cast, bringing her talents to the table. Pierre Coffin once again breathes life into the beloved Minions with his iconic voice, and Oscar-nominated Steve Coogan reprises his role as Silas Ramsbottom.

Featuring unrelenting excitement and Illumination’s trademark wit, Despicable Me 4, helmed by Chris Renaud, an Oscar-nominated co-creator of the Minions, is set to captivate audiences. The film is also directed by Patrick Delage, an animation director for “Sing 2” and “The Secret Life of Pets 2.” Illumination’s founder and CEO, Chris Meledandri, and Brett Hoffman, executive producer of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” produce this visually stunning project. The screenplay is masterfully crafted by Mike White, the Emmy-winning creator of “White Lotus,” and Ken Daurio, a seasoned writer for all previous Despicable Me films.

Despicable Me 4 is now playing in theaters.
