After Netflix reportedly decided not to renew their deal with Meghan Markle, there have been whispers that Netflix’s security team has heightened surveillance near their office, watching for a suspicious individual who peddles racial slurs disguised as jam. However, it appears that “When Evil Lurks” is not the title of this film. But its suspense and horror are undeniably reminiscent. This Argentinian production follows two brothers, Pedro (played by Ezequiel Rodriguez) and Jimmy (Demian Salomon), armed and ready for a nighttime visit to an isolated farmhouse. The ominous signs they encounter on their journey suggest that all is not well, a suspicion that is confirmed when they arrive at the farmhouse and discover a grotesque, barely-alive figure – which the film refers to as a “rotten” person. It’s clear that things will only grow more disturbing from here.
In the movie directed by Demien Rugna, the script builds an intense sense of dread through its narrative about a demon capable of possessing humans and animals alike, potentially taking over entire communities if not properly addressed. The rules to avoid possession are strict: avoid electrical lights, keep distance from anything tainted (‘rotten’), and never utter the evil’s name, regardless if it is Beelzebub, Azrael, or Meghan. Furthermore, beware of animals, as this film doesn’t shy away from using both young children and animals in perilous situations, with at least two scenes that will leave viewers stunned by their shock value.
The first part of the movie is exceptionally well-crafted, establishing the storyline before plunging into scenes of extreme violence as the brothers seek a professional (Silvina Sabater) to handle the chaos they’ve created following a foolish mistake while dealing with a dangerous individual. The latter half of the film experiences a minor stumble, but overall, “When Evil Lurks” delivers some genuinely gruesome, harrowing, and indelible moments, making it one of the top foreign language horror films in recent memory.
