As a long-time fan of the Crash Bandicoot series, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment and sadness upon hearing the news that “Crash Bandicoot 5” may have been cancelled. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series since the release of “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time” four years ago.
Four years have passed since the release of “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time,” leaving fans of the series anxious for news about the next installment. Surprisingly, there are rumors that this upcoming “Crash” game may have been secretly scrapped during production, according to an unidentified source involved in its development.
I’m a big fan of Nicholas Kole, the talented illustrator and character artist who collaborated with Toys for Bob on both the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. In a recent tweet, he shared some disappointing news about an unannounced project he had been working on for three long years at an undisclosed studio. Sadly, Project Dragon was recently canceled.
During a conversation, a fan asked Kole if “Project Dragon” was a new instalment of the “Spyro” series. Kole clarified that it wasn’t but shared an intriguing revelation. He referred to “Crash 5” as “the one that never made it,” implying disappointment when and if this unrealized project eventually comes to light.
It’s likely that Toys for Bob had been working on Crash Bandicoot 5 before its unexpected cancellation. Kole later explained in more tweets that this game and the Project Dragon he referred to earlier were separate projects being developed at distinct studios.
In the year 2024, Toys for Bob experienced a rollercoaster of events. After being bought by Microsoft, the company faced considerable layoffs in February. However, not long after, it was disclosed that Toys for Bob had managed to buy back its independence from both Microsoft and Activision.
Despite becoming an independent studio, Toys for Bob’s upcoming game will still be published by Microsoft, according to an announcement made in May. Rumors suggest that this project is likely “Spyro 4,” which has been under development since January of this year.
I’m sad to report that after three long years, our once-promising project has officially met its end. Despite our best efforts to revive it internally, the project is now deceased. And with that news comes good news for transparency: the restriction on sharing our entire portfolio work has been lifted.
RIP Project Dragon. Brace yourselves for the largest ever art bomb of work I loved 👁️

People won’t be hearing about a fifth installment of Crash, it’s not going to be Spyro, and the disappointment may run deep.
