Marvel Teases Return of Classic Avengers Team

As a long-time fan of the Marvel Universe, I am beyond excited about the return of the West Coast Avengers! The final issue of Invincible Iron Man has left me in awe, with Tony Stark’s plans to rebuild his life and bring back the West Coast Avengers being the cherry on top.

As a dedicated gamer and avid reader of comic books, I’ve eagerly awaited the latest issue of “Invincible Iron Man.” In this final installment, we witness the defeat of Orchis and the imprisonment of Feilong, allowing Tony Stark to embark on the long journey of rebuilding his life. Throughout the series, the Armored Avenger has forged strong alliances with the X-Men, counting War Machine as a trusted friend and even receiving assistance from the Avengers themselves. With just one main “Avengers” title currently gracing the shelves, we’re soon to be blessed with not one but two new additions. The upcoming “Avengers Assemble,” which emerges from the events of “Blood Hunt,” and another title paying homage to a glorious era for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Can’t wait to see what these new titles bring!

Caution: This article reveals plot points from Invincible Iron Man Issue 20. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

In issue #20 of “Invincible Iron Man,” the talented team of Gerry Duggan, Andrea Di Vito, Bryan Valenza, and Joe Caramagna take the helm. The story primarily focuses on Tony Stark addressing various outstanding matters. One such issue is Feilong’s incarceration in Arakko, while another involves his marriage to Emma Frost. However, an unexpected surprise unfolds towards the end of the comic. With her psychic abilities, Emma bestows billions of dollars onto Tony as a gift, allowing him to purchase a west coast Stark Industries airfield near Los Angeles. In collaboration with James Rhodes, they plan to revive the West Coast Avengers.

Iron Man hasn’t made any formal announcements about it just yet, but he has confirmed that the West Coast Avengers will be forming soon. According to him, as he and War Machine take off in hot pursuit of a falling rocket, “Perhaps we’re starting up a new team called the West Coast Avengers.” However, he asks for this information to be kept under wraps for now.

Who are the West Coast Avengers?

Back in the early ’80s, my gaming buddy and I, Roger Stern and Bob Hall, brought the West Coast Avengers to life. Debuting in their own comic book series in 1984, we created this team as an offshoot of the famous Avengers group. Hawkeye was the leader, joined by Mockingbird, Tigra, and Wonder Man. Instead of Tony Stark, it was Jim Rhodes donning the Iron Man suit.

Marvel has been preparing for the West Coast Avengers’ role in the last installments of “Invincible Iron Man.” War Machine hinted at the addition of some villains who assisted them in defeating Orchis, with Iron Man open to the prospect. It’s possible that Marvel Studios is planning to utilize the name for an upcoming project, and this could be Marvel Comics’ strategy to introduce a new “West Coast Avengers” series to fans before that occurs.
