Mortal Kombat Studio NetherRealm Hit with Layoffs

As a long-time fan and follower of Mortal Kombat, I was deeply saddened to hear about the recent layoffs at NetherRealm Studios, specifically their mobile team. Having played Mortal Kombat Mobile for years and witnessed its growth under the talented hands of these developers, it’s disheartening to see them suddenly let go with no clear explanation.

In 2024, unfortunately, there has been a wave of layoffs in the gaming industry, affecting Mortal Kombat developer NeterRealm most recently. Reports indicate that NeterRealm laid off their entire mobile team, an unexpected move given that Mortal Kombat Mobile received a well-received update just a few days prior. At least 50 people were affected by this decision, adding to the downsizing efforts of Warner Bros. Games after the disappointing launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League earlier in the year. The news was first shared on LinkedIn by affected team members. (Source: TechRaptor)

“Regrettably, NetherRealm’s mobile team was closed down last day, affecting many skilled individuals who lost their jobs. They were responsible for maintaining live services on various titles including Mortal Kombat Mobile, Injustice 2, and Mortal Kombat Onslaught. I too was part of this dedicated team. Each member I’ve collaborated with displayed exceptional teamwork, passion, and creativity.”

Samantha Edward, another QA Analyst I work with, echoed the news by sharing her own message. She expressed that everyone on our team is an excellent collaborator and has developed valuable skills through demanding mobile development projects. Although we’re all surprised, many of us will likely share similar sentiments soon. If you know of any job openings where my diverse technical abilities would be beneficial, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I have to inform you I’ve started searching for a new job opportunity. Former NetherRealm team member, Antonio De Francesco shared this on LinkedIn, although he didn’t explicitly state being laid off, the context seems to suggest it. He expressed his appreciation for the time spent at WB/NetherRealm and acknowledged the contributions of everyone who helped him advance in his career there.”

According to TechRaptor, a representative from NetherRealm confirmed that there are no plans to close Mortal Kombat Mobile and Injustice 2. However, they announced that Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will be retired in the near future. The team expressed gratitude to the loyal players of Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.
