Mega Man Creators Want to Make New Games "on an Ongoing Basis"

As a long-time fan of Mega Man, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and frustration when reading about Capcom’s plans to give the blue bomber a more regular release schedule. For decades, Mega Man has been a beloved character in the gaming world, and yet, we haven’t seen a new mainline game since 2018.

For several decades, Mega Man has held the title of Capcom’s representative character. However, fans have expressed a strong desire for more engagement with this iconic blue bomber. In the Capcom Super Elections of this year, over 60,000 participants indicated their interest in seeing a new installment or sequel for Mega Man. Aware of this demand, Capcom is seeking methods to revitalize the series. During its 45th Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders, Capcom announced its intention to provide a more consistent release schedule for the franchise.

Capcom expressed that Mega Man is a cherished intellectual property of theirs, and they’re thinking about developing new games for it continuously.

The publisher’s latest statement aligns with previous information we’ve received about the series. At last year’s shareholders meeting, Capcom mentioned that creating new entries in the series involves numerous considerations such as concept development and gameplay ideas. However, it appears not much progress has been made since then. Nevertheless, it’s clear that Capcom hasn’t abandoned the franchise or its supporters.

Capcom has had a difficult time maintaining a consistent release schedule for the Mega Man series, with the latest mainline games coming out in 2010 and 2018. However, the iconic character continues to thrive due to an ongoing supply of compilation games and rereleases. Recently, “Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection” was launched on various platforms in 2023, and just last month, five Mega Man titles from the Game Boy era became available on Nintendo Switch Online. While these releases have helped bridge the gap, they don’t compare to a fresh installment in the series. Capcom is now running low on games to re-release, leaving fans eagerly anticipating a new addition to the Mega Man series.

Capcom consistently maintains a regular release schedule for beloved franchises such as Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, and Street Fighter, keeping fans satisfied. It would be great if Mega Man received the same treatment, but it remains to be seen if Capcom is capable of making that happen.
