Starfield’s Creation Engine Gets Unreal Engine Aspects for Improvements “Across the Board” – Rumor

2025 was a relatively calm year for Bethesda’s Starfield, particularly after the underwhelming reception of the Shattered Space update. However, 2024 looks promising, with talk of a significant update – potentially a “2.0” version – that will improve the game. While it’s not expected to be as massive an overhaul as the updates for Cyberpunk 2077 or No Man’s Sky, it might include changes to the game’s underlying engine, the Creation Engine.

In a recent podcast, Jez Corden from Windows Central shared that the team developing the Creation Engine is using technology from Unreal Engine to significantly improve it. These upgrades are said to be widespread and represent major technological advancements. Reportedly, The Coalition – and particularly their technical director, Kate Raynor, and her team – have been assisting with these improvements.

So, apparently all this tech work isn’t just for this one game. Bethesda’s saying it’s like a testing ground for what they want to do with future titles, like The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5. And just to be clear, they’re not ditching their Creation engine altogether; they’re actually upgrading it with some of the cool stuff from Unreal Engine. It’s more of a power-up than a complete engine swap, which is pretty interesting!

Corden suggests we shouldn’t take this too seriously, but if it’s accurate, it would explain a lot. The Creation Engine has often been criticized for its bugs and graphics that don’t quite measure up to newer games. Despite these issues, it actually worked well for what Bethesda was trying to achieve with Fallout 4 and Starfield, particularly when it came to building bases.

It’s still too early to know exactly how much this update will change the game and its technology, but we’ll keep you informed as we learn more.
