Deadpool & Wolverine: How Succession Prepared Matthew Macfadyen for MCU Role

Deadpool & Wolverine: How Succession Prepared Matthew Macfadyen for MCU Role

As a massive fan of both Marvel and Matthew Macfadyen, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that he would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as “Mr. Paradox” in the upcoming film “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Having watched Macfadyen’s exceptional performance as Tom Wambsgans in HBO’s “Succession,” it’s impossible not to see the similarities between his character in Succession and Mr. Paradox.

In the film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” actor Matthew Macfadyen makes his entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is recognized for his portrayal of Tom Wambsgans, a submissive corporate figure in HBO’s hit series “Succession.” During an interview with ComicBook during the press tour for “Deadpool 3,” Macfadyen discussed how his experience on “Succession” helped him prepare for joining the MCU. In this production, Macfadyen portrays “Mr. Paradox,” a representative of the Time Variance Authority (TVA) who is competing for power by eliminating Fox’s X-Men Universe from the multiverse. Mr. Paradox enlists Deadpool to collaborate with him, but Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) resists, teaming up instead with a emotionally distressed variant of Wolverine.

If you’re a fan of “Succession,” you might describe Matthew Macfadyen’s character, Mr. Paradox, in “Deadpool & Wolverine” as if he were Tom Wambsgans working at an expanded version of Waystar Royco in another universe. This isn’t just a comparison – during an interview with ComicBook, Macfadyen acknowledged that “Succession” likely influenced his portrayal of Mr. Paradox.

Macfadyen was certain and replied, “Yes, I believe that happened. And I think the key term here is ‘work environment,’ don’t you agree, Mr. Paradox? It could be seen as a variation of Waystar in another universe.”

Macfadyen’s portrayal of Tom Wambsgans in “Succession” garnered him three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series across three seasons, and two Emmy wins for the show’s final seasons. Fans were taken aback by Macfadyen’s authentic British accent, a stark contrast to his previous role as an all-American character. Tom’s complex traits, including spineless obedience, manipulative ambition, and ruthless undertones masked beneath servility, made him one of the most intriguing characters on TV during “Succession’s” tenure. Here’s hoping that Mr. Paradox, played by Macfadyen in the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine film, will exhibit similar depth and nuance rather than simply serving as a prop for their humor.

Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine: Everything to Know

Six years following the occurrences in “Deadpool 2” (2018), Wade Wilson, formerly known as Deadpool, has chosen to leave his mercenary days behind and live a tranquil existence. However, his peace is disrupted when the Time Variance Authority (TVA) – an organization that operates beyond time and space to maintain the timeline’s integrity – approaches him with a new assignment. With his universe on the brink of destruction, Wilson is reluctantly drawn back into action, teaming up with an equally unwilling Wolverine for a mission that could alter the course of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) history.

As a longtime fan of both Deadpool and Wolverine, I’m absolutely thrilled to hear about the impressive cast lined up for the upcoming project. Having grown up watching Hugh Jackman’s iconic portrayal of Wolverine and Ryan Reynold’s witty Deadpool, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I read through this list.

Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and Lauren Shuler Donner take on production roles for “Deadpool and Wolverine,” with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, George Dewey, Simon Kinberg, Rhett Reese, and Paul Wernick contributing as executive producers. The screenplay is penned by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, and Shawn Levy.

Deadpool & Wolverine will be in theaters on July 26th.
