Original Ghostbusters Star Shares Praise for 2016 Reboot

As a long-time fan of the Ghostbusters franchise, I can relate to Dan Aykroyd’s sentiments about the 2016 reboot and his involvement in it. It’s unfortunate that the movie faced backlash before its release, but as Aykroyd rightly points out, the talented female-led cast delivered exceptional performances.

Prior to its theater debut in 2016, the “Ghostbusters” remake with a female cast drew intense online criticism and harassment. Dan Aykroyd, an original “Ghostbusters” star and producer, appeared in the movie and later expressed his continued support for the project, acknowledging that he could have taken on a more significant role in securing its budget. Despite receiving favorable critical feedback and a decent box office performance, the film’s substantial production costs prevented it from generating a sequel.

“Paul Feig’s movie with those impressive women was a favorite of mine, Aykroyd told PEOPLE. At the time, I was disappointed because I was supposed to be a producer but failed to perform my duties, including negotiating costs. Consequently, the production likely exceeded its budget, as is common in films.”

I’ve had the privilege of being involved in bringing a fantastic film to life, and I can’t express enough how much I admired certain aspects of it. The villain at the end was exceptionally well-executed, leaving me thoroughly entertained. Plus, the comedic powerhouses Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, and Kristen Wiig brought their A-game. I’m proud to have been part of this project and wholeheartedly support it. No criticism from me – I believe the film stands tall among its peers.

The 2016 revival didn’t manage to secure a follow-up, but the 2021 release of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” resurrected the franchise and acted as a continuation of the initial films. Notable cast members from the original versions, including Aykroyd, made appearances in this installment. The success of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” led to a new sequel titled “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” which premiered earlier this year. Additionally, an animated series of “Ghostbusters” is currently under development for Netflix.

“Despite having two busy roles in film, Blues Brothers and Ghostbusters, Aykroyd acknowledged. I had planned to retire five years ago, but it didn’t turn out that way. Regardless, I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue working in this industry.”

A sequel to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has yet to be announced.
