As a seasoned gamer with a rich history of following Marvel movies, I must say that the recent turn of events has left me both intrigued and slightly perplexed. The return of the Russo brothers and Robert Downey Jr., who’s back as Doctor Doom, is certainly an exciting prospect for fans like myself. However, the sudden replacement of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror with Downey’s character raises some eyebrows.
Marvel Studios has significantly changed the direction of its future cinematic universe. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” will helm the next two Avengers films. Notably, Robert Downey Jr., who has played Iron Man for a long time, is set to portray Doctor Doom in both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” While “Secret Wars” was previously planned for 2022, “Avengers: Doomsday” replaces the original title, “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.”
In March 2023, actor Jonathan Majors was taken into custody due to accusations of assault, strangulation, and harassment stemming from a heated argument with his partner. Notably, Majors portrayed the character Kang the Conqueror in Marvel productions such as “Loki” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” where he was being groomed to become a villain on par with Thanos within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In December, a court found Majors guilty of third-degree reckless assault and sentenced him to participate in a 52-week domestic violence intervention program and serve probation starting in April. Shortly after his conviction, Marvel Studios decided to part ways with Majors from all upcoming projects.
Jonathan Majors “Heartbroken” Over Kang Replacement
In conversation with TMZ, ex-Marvel actor Jonathan Majors expressed deep sadness about Marvel Studios’ choice to swap his role as Kang with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers movies, stating he is “deeply affected” by this decision.
“Yeah, [I’m] heartbroken, of course,” Majors said. “I love Kang. Doctor Doom is wicked, though.”
Since 2008, Marvel Studios has been collaborating with Downey, starting when they debuted their cinematic universe with “Iron Man.” Initially, the studio showed considerable reservations about casting Downey for the part, owing to his legal troubles in the past.
Majors stated that it seems just for Mr. Downey to receive understanding, interest, affection, and leniency, and also to have the opportunity to express his artistic talents and creativity, especially within the Marvel universe, considering his past legal issues.
In the second season of Loki, which premiered in Fall 2023, Majors portrayed Kang. The finale suggested that Kang’s menace was neutralized, as there were no hints indicating a future threat from this Conqueror. This seems to be Marvel’s method of retiring the character from their upcoming stories.
Without a doubt, without a doubt! I’m thrilled about it! Yes, I do adore Kang. If both fans and Marvel want me to reprise the character, absolutely, let’s go for it! Yes, indeed!
