Marvel Rivals Developer Says Designing Melee-Based Heroes Has Been “One of Our Greatest Challenges”

As a long-time Marvel fan who’s seen my fair share of comic books, movies, and even cosplay events, I must say that the upcoming hero shooter, Marvel Rivals, has me genuinely excited! The roster they’ve put together is nothing short of impressive, with characters that each bring their unique abilities to the table.

The game Marvel Rivals has continually shown potential as a hero shooter, and while its success is undoubtedly due to its own qualities, the strong Marvel license has certainly given it an advantage in multiple ways. One such area is the diverse roster of playable characters, each with unique moves and abilities, which is both beneficial for the game but also poses development challenges for NetEase Games.

In a conversation with GamingBolt, developers of the upcoming shooter game Marvel Rivals discussed the difficulty of maintaining balance in the game while giving each character a unique and well-developed mechanic. Specifically, they mentioned that designing melee-focused heroes like Thor, Spider-Man, Hulk, etc., poses one of their biggest challenges. If their special movesets aren’t executed correctly within a team-based multiplayer setting, the game could become overly chaotic and less enjoyable to play.

“As a die-hard fan of NetEase Games, I can tell you that crafting and showcasing a rich array of Super Heroes, mainly those with melee combat skills like the Hulk, Venom, Magik, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Thor, among others, has been one of our toughest tasks. Each character boasts unique powers, but their common emphasis on close quarters fighting posed a substantial design barrier. In a team-oriented combat game, getting the melee dynamics right is crucial to avoid shallow, chaotic battles that are less engaging.”

According to the developer, what aided them significantly was the vast array of possible actions and unique talents that the Marvel characters offered, giving NetEase ample room for creative exploration.

“The developer noted that the vast potential of Marvel’s characters allowed us plenty of room for investigation and application. For example, we’ve developed and mimicked the Hulk’s incredible jumping capacity, which lets him knock airborne adversaries out of the sky, making him a threat to aerial heroes, and introducing an exclusive aspect to his fighting style.”

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at how the symbiote traits in Venom have been expanded, granting him mid-range fighting abilities that perfectly complement his main melee prowess. Meanwhile, it’s thrilling to see Spider-Man’s agility put to such great use, allowing for fluid combat whether up close or from afar. This adaptability lets players tailor their battle strategy according to the ebb and flow of each fight.

“Adopting this method guarantees that every character appears fully functional and provides a captivating gaming encounter.”

At present, Marvel Rivals is being crafted for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and personal computers. As of now, we don’t have a specific launch date for this game. Keep an eye out for our comprehensive chat with the development crew for more updates.
