Quiet: Level One Graphic Novel Sets a Tiny Skeleton on a Big Adventure

As a seasoned reader with a penchant for unique narratives, I find the concept of “Quiet: Level One” captivating and refreshingly original. The intriguing blend of silence and action in the protagonist Quiet, the enigmatic Narrator Worm, and the labyrinthine dungeon setting are elements that instantly pique my interest.

If you enjoy fantasy and adventure with a charming spin, I’d like to present to you a delightful character named Quiet, starring in an original graphic novel titled “Quiet: Level One.” This creative work is the brainchild of author and artist Jonah Lobe, and the Kickstarter campaign for this new adventure is nearing its conclusion. Although the project has already been fully funded, if you haven’t joined in yet, we’re here to explain why this tale is a must-explore journey. The person responsible for crafting this original story will guide us through the intricacies of the process, so let’s hear what Jonah Lobe has to say about bringing “Quiet: Level One” to life, the factors that inspired our endearing protagonist and his wormy companion, and the surprises awaiting fans who embark on this adventure through the Tree of Worlds.

Quiet Beginnings

In the calm realm of Level One, a minuscule skeleton named Tranquil and his narrating worm companion embark on a mission to rescue the Tree of All Realms. Their journey will involve outwitting and eventually facing off against an unyielding intruder called Galahorn. This captivating saga unfolds across more than 180 pages in its initial chapter, showcased within a graphic novel, a sneak peek of which is provided below.

It’s intriguing that you brought up your daughter enjoying the character, because I had been sketching different versions of Quiet for years before becoming a father. However, when I truly started working on Quiet, not this version but the one preceding it where I was really figuring out who this character is and what her story is, I created 12 illustrations for Instagram along with spoken narration, Lobe explained. Each one was like a self-contained chapter, about a minute long, and was intended to be read like a whimsical storybook, full of magic and whimsy. However, the concept for Quiet, and especially the aesthetic that your daughter became so fond of, it was when I had a one-year-old child. This little kid, with their chubby belly and large head, was just learning to walk around my apartment. It’s as you said – once you become a parent, you start seeing everything else through that perspective.

Diablo Inspirations

Have you ever pondered, while playing a game like Diablo, about the emotions these skeletons might be experiencing? That was exactly what Lobe considered, which influenced certain aspects of Quiet’s design and setting. In simpler terms, before the creation of Quiet, around 2016 or 2017, Lobe sketched a picture of a skeleton carrying a torch on a live stream. The sketch depicted a skeleton with a large head, who seemed to be afraid of the dark since he had a little torch and appeared worried, looking around. Many aspects of Quiet’s design were inspired by playing Diablo and similar games, particularly the Barbarian playstyle in Diablo 2, where you exit Tristram and immediately enter the first dungeon, crushing skeletons as you go.

As I delved into this captivating game, I found myself both observer and participant. It was an exhilarating experience, filled with unparalleled thrill and a sense of supreme power. You, my character, embody strength and invincibility that leaves me in awe. Yet, these tiny skeletons you’re crushing seem oblivious to your presence. They aimlessly wander until you eliminate them.

In a moment of contemplation, Lobe pondered, “What if only one small skeleton remained, returning to his village to find it utterly destroyed? At such a point, he would be left with no alternative but to wield his father’s sword and strive to halt this calamity. This scenario reminded me of countless tales we’ve read in fantasy – it’s as if Thulsa Doom had slain Conan’s entire family, leaving Conan to retaliate. I was essentially reimagining the concept of a powerful barbarian confronting the undead, but from an entirely fresh perspective.”

“Yesterday I came across an intriguing video on Instagram, featuring tiny Koopas enjoying a sunset and discussing the idea of fleeing. One suggests they could escape, but another questions about the ongoing war. The other responds, ‘What about the war? What if we simply ran away?’ Then, suddenly, the scene switches to Mario ruthlessly attacking their people. It was quite shocking,” Lobe explained.

Tiny Skeleton, Epic Journey

In this fictional world called Quiet: Level One, the main character, Quiet, will be guarding a tree known as The Tree of Worlds. This title, Level One, holds significance for both character development and setting. On one hand, it represents Quiet’s low-level status in the game, and on the other, it’s where the story unfolds.

In summary, Lobe explained that Galahorn, the barbarian, aims to reach the highest level, which serves as the origin of all things and represents the end of everything. However, Quiet seeks to prevent this, as the barbarian’s success could cause destruction. Beginning at the first level, the Labyrinth, they both make their entrances—Quiet in our reality and Galahorn from another.

“Level one of the Tree of Worlds is essentially a maze, serving as its defense mechanism. Many intruders may find themselves lost within before reaching the top. However, for characters like Quiet, it can be comforting. As Lobe explained, level one was designed to keep the living from descending uninvited. Although it poses challenges and has dangerous creatures, for someone like Galahorn, it’s more of a playground compared to the real danger they face.”

The graphic novel primarily unfolds within a sprawling underground labyrinth known as level one, a dungeon-like setting. However, it isn’t confined entirely to this level. As Lobe explained, the series aims to move upward, layer by layer. Now that he knows the structure of the tree, he’s careful not to reveal too much at once. Later in the series, we might encounter Quiet Level Three, which could encompass various other levels as well. The progress and development will determine how things unfold further. For now, it seems prudent to begin with a small introduction.

An Even Smaller Companion

As a gamer immersed in this unique world, I find myself playing as Quiet, an enigmatic protagonist who communicates through silent thoughts. A peculiar ally, a tiny worm named Narrator Worm, serves as our conduit to understand her mind. This mute character, Quiet, leaves me constantly guessing about her intentions and emotions based on her actions and body language.

Regarding the book in question, a significant portion has been completed. By supporting our Kickstarter campaign, you won’t need to fret about it taking a decade to reach its conclusion. Instead, you can look forward to various editions of the book, as well as enticing extras such as Quiet figurines and other exciting items.

As a dedicated gamer and creator, I’ve almost wrapped up my latest graphic novel project! While crafting covers, additional graphics, and other visual elements has been an engaging part of the process, it’s taken me away from the core storyline at times. A significant portion of the book was completed last year, but then I had to shift focus to manage our Kickstarter campaign. Fortunately, this diversion allowed me to generate a wealth of exclusive assets for our backers, offering experiences beyond just the graphic novel itself.
