The promising shooter from Romero Games, which was nearly cancelled, is back on track, but details have been scarce. A recent report from Insider Gaming sheds some light on the game, revealing its original title was going to be Hellslayer. It also appears the game’s gameplay will take cues from titles like Hotline Miami. According to Mike Straw on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, players will control a priest battling demons.
According to Straw, the game currently in development is different from the one originally created with Microsoft. While that initial project has been cancelled, some of its ideas are being incorporated into the new version. He revealed the original game was called Hellslayer and described it as a fast-paced, first-person shooter, similar to Hotline Miami, where players would instantly respawn after dying.
Though Straw didn’t share specifics about what from the original game would be included in the new one, he was very excited about what he’d seen, particularly for fans of classic games like Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. He suggested the decision to use only certain elements likely came from the developers carefully evaluating their existing assets and deciding to focus the game’s scope.
John Romero, one of the creators of Doom, has revealed that the new shooter he’s working on has been significantly reworked. Speaking at a gaming event in Madrid earlier this month, Romero explained the game went through a complete redesign, but still includes many ideas from its original version.
We’re not building this game from scratch,” Romero said. “We can reuse assets and ideas from previous projects to create a new indie game. We have plenty of existing material to work with. While the overall design is completely fresh, the team is really enthusiastic about it.
During the game’s redesign, Romero revealed the scope had been reduced, resulting in a significantly smaller game than originally planned. He explained this change also boosted team morale and allowed developers, who are typically department heads, to get hands-on with the coding and design process – something they hadn’t been able to do before.
He explained that small teams allow people to focus on their strengths and do what they do best. That’s what makes them so effective.
Brenda Romero, CEO of Romero Games, had previously announced the project’s cancellation after funding fell through. However, Romero later confirmed the project was saved a few months later. Development had been progressing smoothly, and the studio was consistently meeting its goals.
