As a dedicated radio listener and long-time follower of Zoe Ball’s career, I find myself tuning into BBC Radio 2 every morning without fail. The comforting presence of her voice has become an integral part of my daily routine, much like the sunrise or a steaming cup of coffee. So, waking up to Scott Mills today was a bit like finding a chocolate in your Advent calendar on the 1st of December – unexpected, but still enjoyable.
As a long-time listener of BBC Radio 2, I was surprised to find that Zoe Ball was absent from her usual morning show this past Tuesday (12th August). Normally, her bubbly and energetic presence is always a welcome start to my day, but today, it was Scott Mills who took over the helm. Having followed both presenters’ careers for many years, I have grown accustomed to their distinct styles and personalities. While Scott is certainly a capable DJ in his own right, Zoe’s absence left a noticeable void in the show’s dynamic. I can only imagine what might be going on behind the scenes for her to take a day off, but as a fan, I eagerly await her return to my morning routine.
To start off the program, Scott Mills greeted his audience with a surprise: “Good morning! Didn’t see that coming, did you? You’ve joined us on Monday – glad to have you here!”
Mills swiftly reassured listeners that they were not on the wrong radio station and had not slept past the broadcast, before announcing later that he would take over for Ball in the upcoming weeks.
In case you usually wake up to Zoe at 6:30 a.m., don’t be alarmed if that’s not happening today. Mills is hosting the morning show instead, so there’s no need to stress. It’s still early, you haven’t missed your alarm or overslept, and it’s just Monday, August 12th.
In a subsequent broadcast, he shared with his audience, “For the upcoming weeks, it’s me, Scott Mills, standing in for Zoe. Sending you warmest regards, Zo’, and the entire team does too.”
Why is Zoe Ball absent from Radio 2?
“The representative stated that Zoe is taking some time away and plans to come back in September.”
Last Friday’s show was absent from the airwaves due to the presenter not being able to make it, contrary to her earlier promise to her audience that they’d meet “at dawn”. Instead, the show was hosted by Gaby Roslin.
More recently, she resumed broadcasting this month following a short break to attend to her mother’s health issues, as she was battling cancer.
In March, Ball posted on Instagram through MailOnline: “I strive to be at work during breakfast hours as much as possible, yet sometimes duty calls me home to care for my mother. Many thanks to Gaby for covering for me. Lots of love.”
