What you need to know

  • Capcom’s highly-anticipated action-hunting game, Monster Hunter Wilds, has received another trailer for its weapon overview series.
  • The latest trailer spotlights the Hammer, a weapon type that allows the user fast mobility and high-damaging moves capable of breaking monster skulls.
  • Monster Hunter Wilds will be released later in 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.

As an ardent fan with over a decade of hunting beasts in the Monster Hunter universe under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds has only stoked my excitement for the upcoming game. The Hammer, a weapon type I’ve always found both simple and satisfying to wield, has been given a new lease of life with the inclusion of techniques from past games and some fresh moves.

Over the past week, I’ve been witnessing an exciting rollout from Capcom – a string of trailers showcasing the diverse and entertaining arsenal of weapons players will wield in their monster-hunting adventures within Monster Hunter Wilds. Currently, we’re nearing the end of this weapon trailer series, and the latest instalment offers a comprehensive look at the legendary Hammer weapon type.

The Hammer is a tool for inflicting heavy damage on a monster’s head, serving as a non-musical weapon. Unlike the Hunting Horn, which offers assistance to boost teammates’ abilities, the Hammer solely concentrates on dishing out damage without any supporting techniques.

Using hammers allows for the cracking of massive skulls, causing monsters to drop unique crafting materials that cannot be obtained with other weapons such as Gunlance or Long Sword. Additionally, hammers have the ability to inflict the Stun status on monsters. When a monster is stunned, it will momentarily become unconscious and become susceptible to further attacks.

The Hammer boasts a variety of melee combos, with swings that resemble a frenzied dance, and it packs some powerful strikes that can be boosted for additional damage when charged. Unlike the Great Sword’s stationary charge attacks, the Hammer lets you move while charging, enabling you to keep attacking while dodging incoming blows at the same time.

In Monster Hunter Rise, the Hammer is set to maintain its familiar gameplay style as seen in earlier Monster Hunter titles. However, it will also introduce fresh maneuvers and reintroduce some classic ones for enhanced mobility and increased damage capability.

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest gameplay trailer for this new title has piqued my interest. The changes and moves revealed thus far look promising and innovative, hinting at a fresh and engaging gaming experience. The life-like graphics, intricate storyline, and dynamic gameplay mechanics are reminiscent of some of the most captivating games I’ve played in the past. I can hardly wait to get my hands on this title when it drops!

  • Incorporating the ‘Keeping Sway’ technique from Monster Hunter Rise, which allowed players to dash while maintaining the charge levels on the Hammer’s charge attacks as a core part of its move-set in Monster Hunter Wilds.
  • Bringing back the Spinning Meteor supermove from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, where you spin with the Hammer before delivering a devastating overhead smash, as a Focus Strike attack.
  • A new charge attack where you wind up the Hammer and perform a devastating baseball swing and overhead smash combo to a monster’s skull.

The Hammer’s improved concussive power force in Monster Hunter Wilds will knock monsters senseless

In my favorite Monster Hunter games, I often choose the Hammer as my weapon due to its combination of simplicity and devastating impact. It offers a move-set that is straightforward for beginners to grasp, yet has intricate mechanics that veteran players find rewarding to master. Moreover, it comes with helpful evasion techniques to ensure user survival without compromising its aggressive playstyle. Overall, the Hammer is known for being one of the more consistently powerful weapons in Monster Hunter games.

I’m delighted that Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate techniques are being incorporated into the fundamental moves of the Hammer in Monster Hunter Wilds, as these two games showcased my preferred versions of this weapon type. It leaves me curious if Monster Hunter Wilds will also integrate other beloved techniques from past games across its fourteen weapon categories.

As an observer, I eagerly anticipate unveiling more about the upcoming weapon arsenal in Monster Hunter Wilds, as Capcom plans to roll out daily weapon overview trailers leading up to their grand cinematic trailer debut at Gamescom 2024.

In 2025, the follow-up to one of Capcom’s top-tier Xbox and PC games, Monster Hunter World, known as Monster Hunter Wilds, is set to be released on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.
