Satanic Panic Series Hysteria! Gets First Teaser From Peacock

As a gamer who grew up during the ’80s, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of nostalgia for this upcoming Peacock series, Hysteria! The blend of heavy metal, horror, and the paranoia of the Satanic Panic era is something that resonates deeply with my own experiences.

In the ’70s and ’80s, the surge of heavy metal music, horror films, and Dungeons & Dragons games sparked a period known as “Satanic Panic,” where suspicions about Satanic activities ran high, leading many crimes to be initially blamed on such activities. In the upcoming Peacock series titled “Hysteria!,”, instead of being frightened by this paranoia, a group of characters decides to exploit collective fears for greater popularity. You can watch the first teaser for Hysteria! before its release on October 13th on Peacock.

In the late 1980s, when a popular high school quarterback mysteriously vanishes amidst the “Satanic Panic”, the show “Hysteria!” focuses on an underdog heavy metal band of misfits. They find that they can exploit the town’s newfound fascination with the occult by creating a Satanic image for their band. However, strange murders, abductions, and alleged supernatural occurrences stir up a chain of events, leading to a leather-clad witch hunt pointing right back at them.

Oh my, “Hysteria!” is an exciting production that boasts the talents of Julie Bowen from “Modern Family”, Anna Camp known for her role in “Pitch Perfect”, and the legendary Bruce Campbell, famous for his work in “The Evil Dead” and “Army of Darkness”.

Matthew Scott Kane and David A. Goodman, the creators/producers, expressed in a statement, “‘What are those young ones up to? Whatever it is, it can’t be good.’ This dread has echoed through generations. Kids of the Atomic Era left their families petrified as they rebelled by embracing the sixties counterculture. These ‘free thinkers’ later voted for Reagan and advocated for censorship of the ‘indecent’ and ‘demonic’ heavy metal bands that their children admired. Today, those very kids have grown up and are now criticizing pronouns, TikTok, and a Barbie movie. The cycle persists. It’s challenging not to feel as if someone, or something, is observing it all and chuckling.”

As a gamer, I’d say, “I’ve just discovered this game called ‘Hysteria!‘ – it’s an exciting exploration of the highs and lows of growing up. It captures the rebellious spirit, dreams, and yearnings of youth, while also addressing the terrifying realization that the world we once knew has changed. We aim to create a shared experience for parents and their older kids, filled with chills, laughter, music, and the heart of ‘Hysteria!‘ Growing up? It’s a rollercoaster ride. Being a parent? It’s a thriller too!”

Hysteria! premieres on Peacock on October 13th.
