The War Between the Land and the Sea: Release date speculation for Doctor Who spin-off

As a lifelong Doctor Who fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming miniseries, The War Between the Land and the Sea. It’s been far too long since we had a fully-fledged spin-off from this beloved sci-fi show, and Russell T Davies’ return has surely breathed new life into the universe.

For some time now, fans of Doctor Who have been yearning for a fully developed spin-off series like Tales of the TARDIS, but unfortunately, it’s been quite a while since one has emerged from the popular science fiction program.

Earlier spin-offs featured Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Class, but a fresh miniseries titled “The Battle Between Land and Sea” is coming up next.

It’s hardly unexpected that the spin-off has been given the go-ahead, considering Russell T Davies, our current showrunner, played a significant role in creating Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures during his past leadership of the series. Since returning, he has consistently expressed his desire to expand the universe even more.

When will The War Between the Land and the Sea be released?

As a fervent enthusiast, I can’t wait to share that while the exact release date for The War Between the Land and the Sea remains undetermined, what I do have on my calendar is its commencement of filming in August 2024.

One week following the unveiling of the show at San Diego Comic-Con, Jane Tranter, the executive producer, shared with Deadline: “Last week, we revealed our plans for ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ which marks a unique occasion as it’s the initial miniseries set within this entire universe. We’re overjoyed that the BBC and Disney Plus have given us the opportunity to produce it.”

Based on our current production schedule, you can expect the miniseries to premiere as late as late 2025. There’s a possibility it may be delayed until early 2026. We’ll make sure to update this page whenever we receive more information about the release date of the show.

Upon the initial announcement of the show, Russell T Davies expressed his good fortune of collaborating with such an exceptional cast. He described it as a grand, powerful, and exhilarating drama that would cause seismic waves throughout the Whoniverse. In the Doctor’s absence, humanity faces imminent danger.

Lindsay Salt, head of drama at the BBC, commented: “Russell T. Davies’ The War Between the Land and the Sea is yet another extraordinary and captivating drama, and we’re thrilled to bring it into the realm of Doctor Who!”

Starring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in prominent positions, this fresh, grandiose limited series promises to keep viewers gripped with suspense as UNIT engages in a monumental struggle to safeguard mankind.

What will The War Between the Land and the Sea be about?

The Struggle Between Land and Sea is planned as a five-episode television series, taking place in the universe known as the Whoniverse. This series will be penned by the headwriter of Doctor Who, Russell T Davies, together with Pete McTighe, who has previously scripted episodes featuring the Thirteenth Doctor, specifically Kerblam! and Praxeus.

In each of the upcoming five episodes, directional duties will fall upon Dylan Holmes-Williams, a director with prior experience in seasons 14’s episodes 73 Yards and Dot and Bubble.

In my perspective, when an awe-inspiring and age-old creature arises from the depths of the ocean, causing quite a stir among humans, it sets off a global emergency. The safety of every single person is at stake, so the United Nations Intervention Team jumps into action as both land and sea engage in a fierce battle.

At the Hall H event during San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, Davies revealed that the upcoming series will explore: “When the Doctor is away, who takes care of things? This is the focus of our show. How does the world manage without the Doctor?”

As a longtime fan of Doctor Who, I’m thrilled to share my excitement for the upcoming spin-off series, “The War Between the Land and the Sea.” Having grown up watching the original Sea Devils from the 1972 episode “The Sea Devils,” I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia at their return. The Sea Devils have always been one of my favorite Doctor Who creatures, and I can’t wait to see them take center stage in this new series.

“Underneath the vast oceans reside a unique race. They rise daily to witness the condition of their home, which we’ve unfortunately damaged significantly. It’s not just a battle, but a massive conflict – a war on an unprecedented level.”

In the 2022 episode titled “The Legend of the Sea Devils,” which featured the Thirteenth Doctor, the Sea Devils made their comeback in the modern series of Doctor Who for the first time.

Only four cast members have currently been announced for The War Between the Land and the Sea.

The upcoming spin-off will star Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russell Tovey, former cast members of Doctor Who, who won’t be reprising their old characters (Tish Jones and Midshipman Alonso Frame respectively). Instead, they will bring new characters to life in this spin-off.

In the upcoming series, I’ll have the privilege of working alongside Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient once more, as they reprise their Doctor Who roles as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, the UNIT commander, and Colonel Ibrahim, a UNIT staff member, respectively. Further cast additions are expected to be revealed over time.

Indeed, it’s quite plausible that additional Doctor Who actors, such as Ncuti Gatwa himself, might make an appearance.

The narrative primarily revolves around a dispute that transpires during the Doctor’s absence, but it wouldn’t shock us if he unexpectedly made a brief reappearance somewhere along the way.
