As a long-time fan of the Alien franchise, it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions leading up to the release of Alien: Romulus. The anticipation has been building ever since Fede Alvarez was announced as the director, with Ridley Scott himself handing down his blessing – or so it seems!
As a lifelong fan of the Alien franchise, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as Alien: Romulus hits theaters this week. Having grown up with Ridley Scott’s iconic original film, it’s hard not to be nervous about anyone else taking the reins of this beloved series. But when I heard that Fede Alvarez, the talented director behind Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe, would be stepping into the role, I felt a glimmer of hope.
Prior to the launch of “Alien: Romulus”, director Fede Alvarez shared a brief message from Ridley Scott he received before filming began.
Dear Fede,
Good Luck.
Good Health.
Good Hunting.
Don’t F*ck Up.

It’s not an industry secret that Ridley Scott is extremely touchy when it comes to the Alien franchise. In fact, Alvarez has already revealed just how much anxiety he had about making Alien: Romulus good enough to impress Sir Ridley:
“I wanted him to see it before anybody,” ?lvarez told director Guillermo del Toro during a convention panel. “And everyone gave me the head’s up that Ridley is really tough. He’s really tough, particularly if it has something to do with his movies. He was really tough on Blade Runner [2049], which I thought was a masterpiece, and he had issues with it because it’s really hard for him because it’s his work. I asked him about the new ‘Top Gun’ and he’s like ‘meh.’ I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And he was like, ‘My brother’s was original and this is like eh.’ He really respected it, but you could see how tough he was. So I was like, ‘There’s no way I win this one.'”
Ridley Scott’s reaction to Alien: Romulus may be the greatest endorsement of the film:
Alvarez shared that he entered the room and exclaimed, “Fede, I’m speechless! This is incredible,” followed by a strong affirmation. In his words, experiencing such an event was almost surreal because it involved a mentor whom he deeply respected, watching one of his films, and engaging in an hour-long conversation about the aspects he appreciated. One of the most gratifying comments he received was, “The dialogue is excellent. Are you the writer?” Indeed!
The sci-fi series titled “Alien: Romulus” boasts Cailee Spaeny (“Priscilla” and “Civil War”), David Jonsson (“Industry”), Archie Renaux (“Shadow and Bone”), Isabela Merced (“Transformers 5”, “Madame Web”), Spike Fearn (“The Batman”) and Aileen Wu.
Alien: Romulus will be in theaters this week.
