As a seasoned researcher with over two decades of experience in the gaming industry, I must say that this year’s QuakeCon has certainly piqued my interest, particularly with the closed-door gameplay reveal for DOOM: The Dark Ages. Having covered countless gaming events and witnessed the evolution of numerous franchises, I can confidently say that id Software is taking DOOM in an exciting direction.

At QuakeCon, there have been some buzzing conversations about the upcoming game, DOOM: The Dark Ages. This is because people who attended the event were given exclusive access to a private demonstration of the game that id Software is working on at the moment.

2021’s QuakeCon participants, including content creators, were given a sneak peek of the upcoming DOOM game at the BYOC gaming event hosted by ZeniMax. The attendees watched a 10-minute video showcasing never-before-seen footage from a private event. Although the presentation was kept under wraps, clips and responses to the gameplay reveal quickly popped up on social media platforms like YouTube and Reddit. Gamers who attended the reveal have shared their impressions online.

Twitter user @Okami13_ shared some details about DOOM: The Dark Ages, such as unveiling that the saw shield can be utilized for transportation across the game’s expanded map in The Dark Ages. The map is stated to be more open than those found in previous DOOM games. Additionally, new melee weapons were showcased during the reveal, including a flail capable of gathering ammunition, a mace, and electrically charged fists for close combat.

In DOOM Eternal, the parkour and platforming elements drew mixed responses from players, possibly influencing id Software to alter their approach in DOOM: The Dark Ages. As @Okami13_ puts it, “jumping” in The Dark Ages feels more substantial and akin to the power armor used in Fallout 4’s gameplay. Notably, The Dark Ages is said to overhaul the Glory Kill system, enabling enemies to be affixed to walls with a nail gun, and introducing a massive mech complete with its own Glory Kills and unique HUD. Additionally, it seems that double-barrel plasma shotguns and single-barrel shotguns will make an appearance in this new game.

Based on YouTuber Lavaniel’s explanation, the video content was in an early development stage known as pre-alpha. Lavaniel further mentioned discovering new adversaries that players have yet to encounter. A screenshot from a Discord discussion was later shared on Reddit, revealing additional details such as the saw shield being able to penetrate heavy foes and bounce back green projectiles against enemies when parried.

At the Xbox Games Showcase held over the summer, Bethesda unveiled DOOM: The Dark Ages, set for release sometime in 2025. In recent months, there hasn’t been much activity within the DOOM franchise. However, a significant development occurred during QuakeCon when both DOOM and DOOM II were added to Xbox Game Pass as part of an upgraded bundle. Now, it has been confirmed that DOOM: The Dark Ages will be playable on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 at launch. Subscribers of Xbox Game Pass can enjoy the game on its release day as part of their subscription, available for both PC and Xbox platforms.
