Obsidian Entertainment CEO says development of upcoming Xbox RPG The Outer Worlds 2 is "going really well"

What you need to know

  • Xbox studio Obsidian Entertainment is currently working on multiple projects, including  fantasy RPG Avowed and a science-fiction sequel, The Outer Worlds 2.
  • Speaking with Limit Break Network podcast, Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart shared that work on The Outer Worlds 2 is “going really well.”
  • Feargus added that Obsidian struggled early on with COVID, and that the studio considered canceling projects to focus entirely on Avowed, but was able to come together and find the right balance eventually.

As a longtime fan of Obsidian Entertainment and their immersive role-playing games, I can hardly contain my excitement for The Outer Worlds 2! From the success of the original game to the incredible work on Grounded and Pentiment, it’s clear that the team at Obsidian is firing on all cylinders.

It appears that another potential science-fiction Xbox role-playing game (RPG) might be coming together quite well, despite being some time away from release.

In a chat with Tom Caswell on the freshly-debuted Limit Break Network podcast (thanks, @HazzadorGamin), Obsidian Entertainment’s CEO Feargus Urquhart shared that the progress on The Outer Worlds 2 is thriving. He mentioned that the team is harmoniously collaborating and working out ways to advance development for multiple projects at once, including their upcoming fantasy RPG titled Avowed.

He expressed his genuine admiration, stating, “I must admit, I’ve been truly amazed. The studio has faced significant challenges during the pandemic.” Urquhart further disclosed that Obsidian experienced immense difficulties in the initial months of COVID-19, struggling to manage various projects. At one point, they even contemplated temporarily shifting the entire studio to work on Avowed.

“I admire Microsoft and their teams for their determination to deliver these fantastic games, even though they might not meet the initial timelines. However, as we can see now, Grounded, Pentiment, Avowed, and Outer Worlds 2 have turned out amazingly well.”

As an analyst, I’ve had the opportunity to delve into a previously-recorded podcast regarding the game “Avowed.” However, it’s important to note that this discussion took place prior to the official delay of the game, which is now set for release in February 2025.

In the full podcast, Urquhart touches on several other topics, including the nature of the Fallout TV series giving the franchise a resurgence, Xbox studio closures, and more.

When will The Outer Worlds 2 launch?

In 2019, The Outer Worlds made its debut, offering gamers an expansive solar system to traverse and a narrative to advance in the distinctive style of Obsidian’s role-playing games. This journey allows players to engage in strategic maneuvers like betraying various factions and powerful corporations that exert influence over the surrounding life.

At E3 2021, a playful trailer for The Outer Worlds 2 was unveiled, hinting at minimal progress made on the game up until that point. Following this reveal, Obsidian Entertainment has launched two new titles: Grounded, a cooperative survival game, and Pentiment, an intriguingly medieval narrative game. Their next major Xbox project, Avowed, is scheduled for release on February 18, 2025.

Information about The Outer Worlds 2 has been limited, with only occasional comments from Feargus. This makes it difficult to predict an exact release date for the game. Given the potential scale and enhancements the team is targeting, there’s a possibility that it might launch in 2026. However, we’ll have a clearer picture when more details are disclosed.

Analysis: I will be eagerly waiting

Obsidian Entertainment is rightly renowned, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for The Outer Worlds 2. Fingers crossed we don’t have to wait too long for updates on the sequel. As a big fan of the original game, I’ll simply stay enthusiastic until more details are revealed.

For now, I’m equally excited about the upcoming release of Avowed, scheduled for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC next year. Just like other Xbox first-party games, it will be available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from day one.
