What you need to know
- Google recently debuted Gemini Live, a new experience that lets users have free-flowing conversations with Gemini directly from their smartphones.
- The experience supports mid-response interruptions and can be used in the background or when your phone is locked.
- The experience has started rolling out in English for Android users, but should also be available for iOS in the coming weeks.
As a tech enthusiast who has been following the evolution of digital assistants since their inception, I must say that Google’s announcement of Gemini Live is nothing short of exciting! Having personally experimented with various AI-powered tools over the years, it’s fascinating to see how far we’ve come from simple voice commands to complex, free-flowing conversations.
As a tech enthusiast, I’ve come to appreciate how far we’ve advanced from the days of basic digital assistants like Google Assistant or Siri. Back then, their capabilities were largely confined to routine tasks such as setting alarms, reminders, and performing simple web searches. However, the advent of Generative AI has shattered these boundaries with innovative tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini. These advanced systems are capable of tackling complex tasks, making our digital interactions more engaging and efficient.
At the Google 2024 Made by Google event, they unveiled a fresh development – Gemini Live. This is an innovative chat feature from Google where users can engage in natural, fluid discussions with Gemini, their new mobile assistant.
Google is adding 10 unique languages to Gemini, each with distinct tones and styles, aiming to make conversations with the AI assistant feel more conversational and natural. The company has suggested various scenarios for the enhanced Gemini experience, such as discussing job prospects based on a user’s skills by engaging in a back-and-forth dialogue with the digital assistant.
Remarkably, users have the ability to interject Gemini Live during its response, zeroing in on a particular topic without causing it to lose focus or derail. In essence, it’s like having a trusted companion right in your pocket, ready for brainstorming sessions about novel concepts or rehearsals for crucial discussions, as Google put it.
Additionally, Gemini Live features a hands-free experience. According to Google:
You’re able to continue chatting on the Gemini app even if it runs in the background or when your phone is locked. This allows for uninterrupted conversations much like a traditional phone call, enabling you to keep talking while on-the-go.
The new experience has rolled out in English to Gemini Advanced users on Android. Google says Gemini Live will ship to iOS and more languages in the “coming weeks.”
How do I gain access to Google’s Gemini Live experience?
According to what has been mentioned earlier, the Gemini Live service is being gradually released on Android devices and is expected to become available for iOS users soon. From my understanding, there’s no need to join a waitlist or opt-in. Those who have a $20 Gemini Advanced subscription (which is part of the Google One AI Premium Plan) will be able to access this new experience directly.
Gemini Live functions in a way that resembles OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Feature, allowing users to interject the conversation and zero in on specific topics while the chatbot is still responding. However, this ability has only been made available to a restricted number of users within the Advanced Voice Mode. OpenAI aims to gather feedback from these users to improve their user experience by making necessary adjustments.
