As a long-time Marvel fan who’s witnessed the evolution of Spider-Man across various universes and mediums, I must say the introduction of Jessica Drew from ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘ to the Marvel Universe is an absolute delight! The creative team behind ‘Spider-Society’ has truly outdone themselves in this thrilling first issue.

In the latest addition to Marvel’s collection of Spider-Man comics, a character from “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has been introduced to its comic book equivalent. As fans eagerly anticipate the next chapter in Sony’s “Spider-Verse” movie series, the Marvel Universe is seizing the opportunity presented by the films’ success with the debut of “Spider-Society.” This new series showcases various heroes hailing from different Spider-Verses as they unite to thwart an impending danger. Characters such as Miles Morales, Ghost-Spider, Spider-Ham, and others are part of this Spider-Society, alongside Jessica Drew, the motorcycle-riding character from “Across the Spider-Verse,” who now interacts with the more well-known Spider-Woman.

Heed this friendly heads-up: The ensuing piece delves into the secrets of Spider-Society #1. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid any potential spoilers!

In issue #1 of “Society of Spiders,” the creative team consisting of Alex Segura, Scott Godlewski, Matt Milla, and Joe Caramagna take us through an adventure. This storyline continues from the one-shot in the “Web of Spider-Man” and the miniseries “Edge of Spider-Verse.” In these previous events, Madame Web enlisted Spider-Man 2099 for a clandestine assignment. As Miles Morales, aka Ghost-Spider, along with Gwen Stacy, join forces at the headquarters of the Spider-Society, they encounter fellow superheroes like Web-Weaver, Hunter-Spider, Weapon VIII, Spider-Punk, and Earth-616’s Spider-Woman. The team waits in anticipation for Madame Web to arrive and clarify why she summoned them all. Suddenly, the voice of Issa Rae echoes as Spider-Woman, who we know from “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” arrives on her motorcycle.

For the initial encounter, these two Spider-Women have a chance to meet. “That bike is awesome,” Earth-616 Spider-Woman remarks. “I’m glad it caught your eye. I’m equally excited about teaming up with you,” the Spider-Verse Jessica Drew replies.

Marvel introduces a multiversal team of Spider-Man villains

It seems that the Spider-Community is unaware they’ve been lured into a trap. It wasn’t Madame Web who gathered them; instead, a new bandit gang named the Sinister Squadron, which includes nefarious characters like Gwen Stacy’s Green Goblin, springs an ambush on the Spider-Community, capturing Miles Morales, Ghost-Spider, and others. Their aim is to annihilate the Spider-Community. Ara?a (Anya Corazon) and Madame Web manage to flee with a few heroes left standing, who are now on a mission to save their comrades.

The leaner version of the Spider-Team now includes Arachne, Silk Weaver, Armored Spider-Man, the Spider-Woman from the Spider-Verse, Hunter Spider, Punk Spider, and Kitty Spider. Spider-Woman serves as their secret weapon due to the fact that the Sinister Squadron is only aware of Earth-616’s Spider-Woman. Additionally, she has prior knowledge about some members of the Sinister Squadron, which she can leverage for the benefit of the Spider-Team.
