As a gamer with a decade-long immersion in the anime universe, I must say that change is the only constant in this dynamic world of storytelling. The latest shift in the voice cast of One Piece has left me both intrigued and excited – like swapping controllers mid-game!
After many years on the job, the cast of “One Piece” has seen a change with a new actor taking over one of its roles. Previously voiced by an actor involved in a scandal, Sabo will now be played by a different voice actor, as confirmed earlier this year.
In the scene that follows, actor Miyu Irino makes his entry to the One Piece team as the character Sabo, who first appeared in 1992. This week, Sabo made a triumphant return to the anime after Garp saved Koby. It was during this rescue mission that Sabo shared exciting new details about the Five Elders.

This is because Sabo is a crucial figure in the Revolutionary Army and possesses significant power on his own.
If the name Irino seems familiar to you, it’s likely because you have a keen ear for voices. While he might be best recognized as the voice of Haku in Spirited Away, Irino has taken on numerous significant roles within anime. These range from Shoya Ishida in A Silent Voice and Koshi Sugawara in Haikyu to characters in other popular series. In fact, outside Japan, he is also known as the voice of Sora in Kingdom Hearts, which makes his involvement in One Piece particularly noteworthy.
The reason behind Furuya’s departure from “One Piece” was due to a personal controversy that surfaced. In May 2024, it was disclosed in Japan that Furuya had been involved with a fan who was significantly younger than him, sparking a scandal. In his statement about the affair, Furuya admitted to physically assaulting the woman and attempting to coerce her into having an abortion. The public’s strong reaction to the scandal led Furuya to resign from “One Piece” as well as “Detective Conan”.
