Tyrese Gibson Reveals Surprising Way He Recruited Scott Eastwood for 1992 Movie

As a cinephile with a deep appreciation for gritty, character-driven dramas that delve into the complexities of human relationships, I find Tyrese Gibson’s story about bringing Scott Eastwood into the fold for the film “1992” utterly captivating. It’s not every day you hear of an actor recruiting another while they were both munching on breakfast burritos!

Tyrese Gibson shared an engaging account of how he convinced Scott Eastwood to be part of the movie “1992.” Directed by Ariel Vromen, this film is set during the tumultuous period in Los Angeles when the verdict on Rodney King was announced, sparking city-wide riots. Given that Gibson hails from LA, “1992” proved to be an ideal role for the “Fast & Furious” actor. Interestingly, Eastwood’s participation in “1992” wasn’t due to his involvement in the “Fast & Furious” franchise, as he joined that in 2017’s “The Fate of the Furious” and more recently starred alongside Gibson in “Fast X.” Instead, according to Gibson, their shared history played a significant role in Eastwood joining the cast of “1992.”

Tyrese Gibson recently chatted with us before the premiere of “1992” and shared how he and Scott Eastwood teamed up for the project. It wasn’t during their work on “Fast X“, but rather when Scott was staying at Gibson’s home in Atlanta while working on another film. As Gibson was enjoying his breakfast burrito, Scott received a call from Ariel Vromen about “1992“. It was then that the conversation about the project started between them, and eventually led to Eastwood joining the cast of “1992“. You can catch the full interview in the player above.

How Tyrese Gibson brought real-world experiences to 1992

Tyrese Gibson discussed another facet of his life in 1992, specifically being a Black father from Los Angeles and the unique aspects of parenting among Black men compared to their White counterparts. In his words, “I wouldn’t go as far as saying being a Black father is entirely different from being any other father, but there are distinct ways we handle certain situations, our dynamic.” He explained that even if a man is neglectful or only meets his child at 15, he still expects respect. “We’re not into constant back-and-forth; there was energy I couldn’t connect with,” he added, expressing the need to communicate and resolve these differences.

What is 1992 movie about?

1992 saw Mercer (Tyrese Gibson) striving to reconcile his life and bond with his son (Christopher A’mmanuel), all while navigating the chaotic aftermath of the Rodney King verdict’s upheaval in LA. Meanwhile, another father-son duo (Ray Liotta and Scott Eastwood) find themselves testing their strained relationship as they concoct a risky heist to pilfer catalytic converters, prized for their platinum content, from the factory where Mercer is employed. As Los Angeles simmers with tension and erupts into chaos, both families teeter on the brink when their paths cross in this gripping crime-thriller set amidst the unrest.

Featuring Tyrese Gibson, Clarke Bennett, Dylan Arnold, Christopher A’mmanuel, Michael Beasley, Ori Pfeffer, Tosin Morohunfola, Oleg Taktarov, alongside Scott Eastwood and the late Ray Liotta in one of his last performances, the film “1992” is helmed by director Ariel Vromen, based on a screenplay co-written by Sascha Penn and himself. The story was originally conceived by Sascha Penn. It is produced by Ariel Vromen, Andreas Rommel, Maurice Fadida, Sascha Penn, and Adam Kolbrenner.

1992 premieres in theaters August 30th.
