The Tower season 3 has ‘shocks’, ‘surprises’ and a moral compass that’s “shaken”

As a dedicated fan with years of binge-watching crime dramas under my belt, I eagerly await the third season of The Tower. Having followed Sarah Collins and her team through their gritty investigations, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation tinged with apprehension as Gemma Whelan hints at a shaky moral compass for our lead DS this time around.

In just a short while, we’ll be immersed in the third season of The Tower. Similar to its first two seasons, it promises to delve deep into another chilling mystery where our well-known characters find themselves confronting and solving yet another intriguing case that has come their way.

In a fresh adaptation by screenwriter Patrick Harbinson, known for his work on Homeland and 24, the upcoming third season takes the title The Tower 3: Gallowstree Lane. This season draws inspiration from the novel of the same name written by Kate London.

In the current season, several recurring characters make a comeback, yet there’s a twist for the main character DS Sarah Collins, hinted by actress Gemma Whelan, as she suggests that Sarah might grapple with some questionable ethical principles this time around.

As a movie reviewer, I found myself questioning the rigid adherence to the rulebook displayed by our protagonist this season. The case of this troubled child seemed to challenge her usual effectiveness, as she’s accustomed to making a difference through strict adherence to police procedures. However, this time around, things didn’t go according to plan, and it left me pondering whether the rules might not always be enough.

As someone who has spent years helping others navigate through their messy lives, I can confidently say that this season seems particularly chaotic for Sarah. For the first time, I find myself at a loss for words as to how she can untangle herself from this web of confusion. It’s not every day that we come across situations where even our best problem-solving skills are rendered useless. I can only imagine the turmoil she must be feeling right now and I truly hope that she finds the strength and guidance she needs to move forward.

In the narrative, Sarah encounters a case involving the stabbing of a youth, coincidentally running into Lizzie, who’s now both a fresh detective and a mother, at the same time.

As per the given summary, Sarah finds herself at odds with Detective Inspector Kieran Shaw, who leads Operation Perseus – a covert police unit established for dismantling the powerful South London drug lord, Shakiel Oliver.

Kieran is teaming up with detective Steve Bradshaw, who’s secretly infiltrating Shakiel’s criminal organization. The central dispute between Sarah and Kieran revolves around 15-year-old Ryan Kennedy, who saw the deadly stabbing but is also an essential member of Shakiel’s close circle. As we approach the stunning finale of Perseus, Ryan will take on a startling part.

In an exciting teaser about the upcoming third season, Harbinson hinted: “When I read through all three books and arrived at Gallowstree Lane, I couldn’t help but think, ‘If we ever reach this stage with The Tower, it will be a joy to bring to life on screen.’ The narrative flow is so powerfully dramatic, and it beautifully intertwines personal tales with the broader crime saga, particularly knife crime.”

Harbinson adds: “Those responsible for knife violence, along with the individuals carrying out such acts, seemed intriguing to me, and I looked forward to crafting new versions of this theme.”

“What makes our addition unique, more like depth than intricacy, is that we can conclude the tale of The Tower with Lizzie and Hadley on top of the tower. This ending mirrors what transpired in the first few minutes of series three, three years ago.”

If viewers familiar with The Tower encounter this, they’ll likely find it quite unexpected, emotionally stirring, and somewhat startling in its narrative.

Season 3 of The Tower will be broadcast on both ITV1 and ITVX, starting from Monday, September 2nd, and running through Thursday, September 5th, each night at 9:00 PM.
