ComicBook had the opportunity to converse with Tabletop Tycoon Founder Dan Yarrington and Welcome to Everdell Co-Designer James Wilson about the game, revealing what both newcomers and dedicated players will appreciate once they dive in.
A Perfect Starting Point
Everdell: A Comprehensive Starter Kit invites you into the enchanting realm of Everdell, catering to a diverse range of players by balancing cost and complexity. It’s particularly designed for newcomers to grow with the game, allowing younger players to gradually explore more intricate aspects as they mature. In essence, it’s a self-contained experience much like Monopoly, Jenga or other classic games you’re familiar with; there are no additional expansions required to get started.
“Yarrington stated, ‘The ease of this game is what makes it fantastic, especially for young children like my four-year-old who started playing when the project began. Now, at eight years old, he can fully participate in the game. This means that we can continue enjoying Welcome to Everdell together, and its appeal extends to all ages. In fact, some people in their fifties even prefer it over the original Everdell.’ “

Not Just a Kids Game
The idea for Everdell arose from watching Wilson’s children play with the various components of the original Everdell game, without actually playing the game itself. They seemed joyful and engaged in this activity for extended periods. Intrigued by their enthusiasm, Wilson and his co-designer (who is also his wife) began brainstorming about creating a version of Everdell that would be accessible to young children while still maintaining the essence of the original game. As the pieces were already available and the children were indicating their interest, they simply followed their lead in shaping the game to suit their needs.
Wilson stated that the intention was not to create a children’s game, but rather a game suitable for both adults and children. He explained that this is significant because often in children’s games, adults may not participate or become engaged. However, with this game, he has seen 50-year-old adults expressing enjoyment, while children also request to play it repeatedly. Essentially, the aim was to develop a game that would appeal to both age groups, rather than being exclusive to just one.
What The Future Holds
Experience Everdell for the first time! Now available at Walmart, this game offers a captivating introduction to the Everdell universe. Yarrington hinted that the franchise has numerous exciting prospects in the pipeline, promising an abundance of future content for players to anticipate. As Yarrington expressed, “This is our most accessible and widely distributed offering yet, given its affordable price point and accessibility through Walmart. We’re hoping this will draw in new players, expanding beyond the many who have already enjoyed Everdell. And yes, we’ve been around for six years now, celebrating our five-year anniversary last year, so we’re looking to continue at least until our tenth year, and beyond if the community keeps supporting us.”
Everdell is designed to offer a comprehensive gaming experience suitable for various age groups, and one aspect that makes it standout is its self-contained nature. However, this doesn’t rule out the possibility of incorporating some expansion content into its world. So, while there might not be a Far Shore themed Everdell right now, it could potentially happen in the future. As Yarrington explained, “Everdell is designed as an all-in-one game, but that doesn’t mean we won’t explore ways to introduce some expansion content into its realm.”
