Blade Runner 2099 Adds Fan-Favorite Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Actor

As a seasoned gamer and a dedicated fan of the sci-fi genre who’s had the privilege to witness the evolution of Ridley Scott’s iconic universe unfold, I can’t help but feel like a kid on Christmas eve when I hear about the upcoming “Blade Runner 2099” limited series. With such an impressive cast lineup that includes the likes of Michelle Yeoh, Hunter Schafer, and Tom Burke, it’s hard not to get excited.

Beyond the Alien series, Ridley Scott’s other flourishing franchise – Blade Runner – is making a comeback. After Scott directed the original in 1982 and Denis Villeneuve brought us Blade Runner 2049 in 2017, Prime Video is now developing a limited series titled Blade Runner 2099. The upcoming show stars Michelle Yeoh, an Academy Award winner, as a Replicant nearing the end of its lifespan. Additionally, you’ll see Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games franchise), Katelyn Rose Downey (The Nun II), Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy), and Daniel Rigby (Renegade Nell) as regular cast members. Alongside these talented actors, Amy Lennox (Holby City), Johnny Harris (A Gentleman In Moscow), Sheila Atim (The Woman King), and Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon) will also be part of the series. To top it off, Deadline reports that Tom Burke (Furiousa: A Mad Max Saga) and Maurizio Lombardi (Ripley) will also join the cast.

As a devoted fan, I can share that, according to recent updates, Burke and Lombardi are set to reprise their roles in the show; however, details about their characters have yet to be disclosed. The much-anticipated sequel to 2049, which underwent several years of development before moving into production, faced a temporary halt last year due to the WGA and SAG strikes. But just this week, it was confirmed that production on the series has resumed again.

According to executive producer Michael Green, we are currently shooting the show now. Showrunner Silka Luisa has crafted an exceptional series, and the footage I’ve seen from daily shootings is breathtaking. I’ve also read the script, and it’s safe to say that the team has been blown away by her development of the world, making it more expansive. It’s a truly impressive, intelligent, and emotional story that I can’t wait to see unfold.

The upcoming series titled “Blade Runner 2099” is set to be overseen by Luisa (known for “Shining Girls”), who will take on the role of executive producer alongside Scott, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson from Alcon Entertainment, their TV President Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger from Scott Free Productions, Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. As reported by “Deadline”, Jonathan van Tulleken of “Sh?gun” will direct the first two episodes while also serving as an executive producer, with Steven Johnson acting as co-executive producer.

The release date for “Blade Runner 2099” hasn’t been announced yet, so keep an eye out for further announcements. For now, you can stream or purchase both “Blade Runner” and “Blade Runner 2049” online.
