Could Bitcoin be the answer to BRICS countries’ de-dollarization efforts?

  • NDB now working towards expanding the use of local currencies to “de-dollarize”
  • Bitcoin could be the next big reserve currency

As a seasoned analyst with over two decades of experience in global finance and economics, I have witnessed the ebb and flow of currencies and financial systems across the globe. The recent announcement by the New Development Bank (NDB) to expand the use of local currencies is indeed a significant step towards de-dollarization, and it’s fascinating to see this movement gain momentum among BRICS countries.

120 countries from around the world participated in the International Municipal Forum of BRICS nations a short while ago. Following this event, the New Development Bank held its 9th Annual Meeting. Today’s headlines are buzzing about this event after the NDB’s President Dilma Rousseff stated that the bank is making strides to increase the usage of local currencies, which can be interpreted as an effort to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar – a process often referred to as de-dollarization.

Hence, the question – What does this mean for Bitcoin?

According to Rousseff,

The main focus of the National Bank will take place in local currencies.

An international movement?

The BRIC has been the currency of this de-dollarization movement over the past few years. In fact, during the 15th Annual Summit of the BRIC countries last year, there was much support for a singular “BRICS currency” At the time, Brazil’s President Lula Da Silva said, The BRIC has been the currency of this de-dollarization movement over the past few years. “It increases our payment options and reduces our vulnerabilities.”

It’s important to note that the majority of the world hasn’t yet moved away from using the U.S. dollar. As indicated by the Atlantic Council’s Dollar Dominance Monitor, the U.S. dollar makes up about 58% of all worldwide foreign exchange reserves, and it also controls approximately 88% of all international transactions in foreign exchange.

Could Bitcoin be the answer to BRICS countries’ de-dollarization efforts?

From my perspective as a researcher, it’s clear that de-dollarization isn’t something we can expect to occur in the near future or even the mid-term. However, it’s important to acknowledge China’s significant strides towards de-dollarizing its own economy over time.

Could Bitcoin be the answer to BRICS countries’ de-dollarization efforts?

Instead, it’s quite possible that this trend could continue over a longer period. This is particularly true given that the U.S. dollar’s share of all global foreign reserves has decreased significantly in just the last eight years, falling from 65.3% to 58.8%. Furthermore, numerous countries, especially those connected with BRICS, have been acquiring gold even as prices have climbed.

Could Bitcoin be the answer to BRICS countries’ de-dollarization efforts?

Gold’s reputation as a safe haven and a means for storing value has significantly increased since 2019, particularly following the outbreak of COVID-19. This surge in interest has also extended to other assets that share similar characteristics, such as gold. Recently, Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies have emerged as another asset class with such properties.

Bitcoin to the rescue?

For example, countries such as Russia and Iran have started utilizing Bitcoin and Bitcoin mining as a method to lessen the impact of international sanctions they face. Notably, Russia is currently experimenting with cryptocurrency trading platforms to determine how these digital transactions can be facilitated across borders.

Just like individual entities, BRICS has shown interest in introducing a digital currency backed by gold, stemming from past talks about establishing a “BRICS currency.”

Beyond these passions, numerous nations express keen interest in emulating El Salvador by amassing Bitcoin as a national reserve asset. In 2021, President Bukele proposed this move with an aim to decouple the economy from the US dollar, despite facing criticism from institutions like the World Bank and IMF regarding this decision.

2024 presents a new landscape, with prominent entities such as MicroStrategy and Metaplanet venturing into cryptocurrencies. Moreover, Bitcoin and Ethereum Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) have garnered significant attention on Wall Street, indicating growing institutional interest in this asset class.

Collectively, these advancements signal a potential surge for cryptocurrencies in the near future. Should BRICS nations manage to delink from the US dollar and divert just a small portion of the current USD liquidity into cryptocurrencies, the market landscape could be dramatically altered.
