Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa and Sharon D Clarke’s Importance of Being Earnest coming to cinemas

As a long-time aficionado of the dramatic arts and a frequent visitor to the hallowed halls of our nation’s theatres, I find myself thoroughly enthralled by the impending cinematic adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s timeless masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest. The ensemble cast is nothing short of a dream come true for theatre enthusiasts, boasting the likes of Ncuti Gatwa and Sharon D Clarke, both veterans of the Whoniverse, as well as Ronkẹ Adékọluẹjọ́, Eliza Scanlen, and Hugh Skinner.

Over the past few years, the National Theatre has been broadcasting some of their top performances to cinemas nationwide, and the next production to receive this big-screen adaptation is going to be a revival of Oscar Wilde’s classic play, The Importance of Being Earnest

In this play, which is overseen by Max Webster, the director of Life of Pi, we find Ncuti Gatwa, who plays the Doctor, as well as Sharon D Clarke, another veteran of the Whoniverse (and a three-time Olivier Award winner). Additionally, it includes Ronkẹ Adékọluẹjọ́ (known from Rain Dogs), Eliza Scanlen (from Little Women), and Hugh Skinner (recognized for his role in Fleabag)

The performance at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton stage is going to be recorded from November 20th, 2024, to January 25th, 2025. Starting from February 20th, 2025, the movie version of this production will be screened in cinemas worldwide

Under the description of a “cheerful reinvention” of the original comedy, the formal summary goes like this: “Taking on the duty of a rural caretaker, Jack (Skinner) secretly indulges in city life, disguised as someone else.”

“Meanwhile, his friend Algy (Ncuti Gatwa) adopts a similar facade. Hoping to impress two eligible ladies, the gentlemen find themselves caught in a web of lies they must carefully navigate.”

Known primarily for his television roles, Gatwa, however, has a rich background in theatre. He started his acting journey on stage at the Dundee Rep, and later played Mercutio in a 2014 staging of Romeo & Juliet at HOME in Manchester

In addition to his previous theatre roles, he has also appeared in plays like Shakespeare in Love at the Noël Coward Theatre, A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Shakespeare’s Globe, and The Claim at The Crucible

When news of his casting broke, Director Webster shared that it was during A Midsummer Night’s Dream where Gatwa initially impressed him. Later, he grew more fond of Gatwa’s talent as seen in the series Sex Education

He mentioned that he believed Algy would be an exceptionally clever, lively, and stylish character, and he immediately came to mind as the ideal choice for the role. It’s simply astounding that he’s taking on this part
