Rebecca Cheptegei’s Father Shares Heartbreaking Plea After Her Death

As a dedicated follower of athletics and a strong advocate for women’s rights, I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Rebecca Cheptegei. The story of her life, filled with dreams, determination, and achievements, was brutally cut short by senseless violence.

Rebecca Cheptegei’s loved ones are looking for justice.

Following the death of the Olympic marathon runner, who suffered from total organ failure after being injured in an alleged gasoline attack by her partner Dickson Ndiema, Joseph Cheptegei is making an appeal.

“Joseph expressed deep sorrow to reporters on September 5th, as reported by the Los Angeles Times at the Kenyan hospital where his daughter passed away. He implores for assistance in bringing the individual responsible for taking his daughter’s life to justice.”

He added, “At present, the individual who caused harm to my daughter is a known murderer, and I’m still waiting to understand what actions the law enforcement agencies are taking. He remains at large and may possibly escape.”

According to reports from the BBC, Jeremiah Ole Kosiom, the local police chief, stated that Rebecca passed away three days later after an incident where Dickson allegedly poured gasoline on her and ignited it during a disagreement at her Kenyan residence. This information was shared with reporters.

As reported by the LA Times, Rebecca’s parents stated that their daughter, who hails from Uganda, had purchased property in Kenya’s Trans Nzoia county with the intention of being near the region’s athletic training facilities. The news outlet also mentioned a report submitted by the local police chief, suggesting that Rebecca and Dickson were overheard arguing about the land where her house stood prior to the attack.

In the wake of the attack resulting in Rebecca’s demise, various entities and authorities have voiced their indignation about this event, given that it takes place against a backdrop of persistent cases of gender-based violence in Kenya.

In my role as a lifestyle expert, I’d like to echo similar sentiments expressed by Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei. The unfortunate and saddening incident involving an athlete from Uganda is deeply regrettable. It’s crucial to remember that resolving disputes over property, especially in relationships, should never lead to harm or violence. As a community, we firmly denounce such behavior as it goes against the principles of peaceful coexistence and respect for one another.

Additionally, the Ugandan Athletics Association voiced their sorrow for the passing of their representative who participated in the marathon event at the 2024 Paris Olympics for Uganda.

“With great sorrow, we share the heartbreaking news that Rebecca Cheptegei, our athlete, lost her life tragically due to domestic violence this morning. As an organization, we strongly denounce such actions and demand justice. May her spirit find tranquility.” (on X, formerly Twitter)

But there are those who are promising to answer Joseph’s call for justice.

Kenya’s Sports Minister, Kipchumba Murkomen, stated that the authorities will guarantee that Rebecca’s family members are given fair compensation.

He emphasized through a written declaration, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, “This unfortunate incident serves as a powerful warning that we need to intensify efforts against the appalling issue of gender-based violence within our community. Regrettably, this problem has been surfacing even in the prestigious sports arenas of late.”
