Turn-Based RPG Announced 2 Years Ago Finally Releases Next Month

Heavy Lunch Studio first announced Hermit and Pig, a turn-based RPG about a solitary hermit and his truffle-hunting pig, back in June 2023. They immediately added the game to Steam, allowing players to add it to their wishlists, and then began full development. After a two-year wait for eager fans, the game is finally ready to launch! Hermit and Pig will be available on Steam starting January 22, 2026, and you can even try out a demo now to get a sneak peek.

The game appears to be a relaxing experience, similar to games like Stardew Valley. You play as a hermit and their pig, venturing out to find mushrooms and generally avoid people. However, their peaceful routine is disrupted when a girl from a nearby village appears, pulling them into a larger mystery. As you explore diverse locations, players will battle enemies using turn-based combat and talk to townspeople to uncover the truth, all while gathering a variety of mushrooms.

Hermit and Pig Is a Casual and Adorable Turn-Based RPG

The game was first announced in 2023 with a trailer that showed off its gameplay and distinctive art style. Interestingly, it uses intentionally simple, low-resolution graphics reminiscent of Microsoft Paint, which has become a key part of its charm. Hermit and Pig appears to be an enjoyable adventure game combining adorable characters with RPG features to deliver a surprisingly deep story, filled with various enemies, characters, and quests. A small collection of screenshots has been shared, and some industry professionals have previewed a demo of the game.

Both Rock Paper Shotgun and PCGamesN are excited about Hermit and Pig, calling it a refreshing take on turn-based RPGs and one of the most anticipated games in the genre. Early impressions from a demo suggest it lives up to the hype, offering a fun and engaging experience. The game blends traditional turn-based combat with fighting game-style combos, letting players use a wide range of moves against over 100 different enemies. Battles require quick thinking, as players must execute their actions before time runs out, adding a fast-paced challenge to the gameplay.

The main character is a hermit who doesn’t enjoy talking to people. The game has a unique mechanic where bad dialogue choices cause ‘cringe damage.’ Mushrooms play a key role, offering healing, helpful boosts, and generally improving the gameplay. There’s even a quest to find a legendary giant mushroom, which requires the hermit to overcome obstacles like corporate employees, competing hunters, a strange cult, and aggressive wildlife.

Get Ready for a Fun Gameplay Experience in Hermit and Pig

Currently, Hermit and Pig is planned for release only on Steam, but the developers might consider other platforms if the game is successful. The price isn’t listed on the studio’s website or Steam page, so it’s unknown how much it will cost. This is the first game created by Mason Dickerson and Nathan Kennedy, two friends who formed Heavy Lunch Studio to develop it. If the game lives up to expectations, it could be a promising start for this new indie development team.
