As a seasoned gamer who has navigated through countless universes and dimensions within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I must say that the news of Spider-Man 4 coming to life is nothing short of exhilarating! With Destin Daniel Cretton at the helm, and Tom Holland returning as our favorite wall-crawler, it’s time for some high-flying, web-slinging action.
It appears that the long-awaited “Spider-Man 4” is gaining momentum at Marvel Studios and Sony, as it was announced on Monday that director Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang-Chi”) has agreed to direct the upcoming film in the series. With Tom Holland set to return as the lead character, production is expected to start early next year, making “Spider-Man 4” seem like it’s just around the corner. The mystery now lies in what kind of Spider-Man story this will be and which other Marvel characters might make an appearance.
Ever since Spider-Man joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his solo movies have always brought in a big name from the franchise. I can’t help but think that trend will carry on with Spider-Man 4. With Destin Daniel Cretton at the helm now, it feels like Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi could be a natural fit. After all, they’ve got a bit of history together, going way back to their comic book days.
In the upcoming Spider-Man film, it’s possible that a past Spider-Man actor could take on a significant role. The release of this movie, titled Spider-Man 4, is expected to coincide with the two-part Avengers series directed by the Russo Brothers, specifically Avengers: Secret Wars. Given that these universes are merging, it’s not far-fetched to imagine Peter Parker seeking aid from his counterparts in different realities.
It appears that another big-scale Spider-Man movie might be on the horizon (I elaborated on this point after the Cretton announcement), and it seems almost certain. Under such circumstances, it wouldn’t be too surprising if a character like Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man reappeared in Spider-Man 4.
In contrast, Maguire’s portrayal of the character seems to have fully unfolded its narrative, but Garfield’s Peter Parker remains quite vocal and active. He carries unresolved matters that could be addressed, potentially concurrently with Holland’s character, given the possibility of him not receiving a third standalone movie. Additionally, his recent comments on Spider-Man’s future add intrigue to this potential collaboration.
Just hours before the news of Cretton’s hiring, Garfield appeared at the Toronto Film Festival and said, “I think it’s kind of endless, what can be done with that character. Not that we should; not that we will, but I think you can always find another story to tell.”
Once more, it seems that Spider-Man 4 should revolve around a confined, street-level narrative centered on the responsibilities of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, Peter Parker. This was the kind of story Marvel initially promised, remember? However, if this doesn’t pan out as planned, it might just be setting up for another character taking on the Spider-Man role or perhaps even two new ones joining the fray.
