The early 2000s were a uniquely creative period for video games. Many new games and series emerged, often pushing boundaries and trying unusual things with established gameplay. Developers were willing to take chances that are less common now, and one series on the Xbox perfectly exemplified this spirit. Released during the height of the platformer craze, it managed to find a dedicated fanbase with its distinctive appeal. Unfortunately, the series only got one follow-up game before development stopped, and fans have been waiting for a continuation ever since.
Released early in the life of the original Xbox, Blinx: The Time Sweeper was Microsoft’s attempt to create a vibrant and imaginative game that could compete with popular titles on other consoles. While it had the potential to become a major franchise, it didn’t achieve the same success as iconic Xbox series like Halo and Gears of War, and was eventually forgotten.
Blinx: The Time Sweeper Was a Quirky and Charming Platformer

Released in 2002, Blinx: The Time Sweeper was instantly unique. Created by Artoon, the game featured Blinx, a cat who could control time using a special vacuum cleaner. While the idea was strange even for a platforming game, this originality became the game’s biggest asset, and Artoon fully embraced it.
The ability to manipulate time wasn’t just a fun addition – players could rewind, fast forward, pause, and even record their actions to overcome challenges and beat enemies. This created a sense of freedom and experimentation in each level. Instead of just reacting, players were encouraged to think outside the box, as combat, platforming, and puzzle-solving all worked together seamlessly.
The game was visually appealing, using vibrant colors and lively animations to create a lovable character in Blinx. Its world felt imaginative and fun, but not overly simplistic, and the music added to that adventurous spirit. While some found it challenging to learn, reviewers generally appreciated how original and ambitious the game was.
Blinx 2: Masters of Time and Space built upon the original game in a big way. It added competing sides, different ways to play, and more focused levels. While not everyone loved the changes, players generally liked that the game was trying new things instead of simply repeating the first one. Unfortunately, this would be the last game Artoon ever made featuring Blinx and his time-bending adventures.
Blinx Was Gone in the Blink of an Eye

Although Blinx was an imaginative game, it wasn’t popular enough to ensure its success. The first game did okay, but didn’t become a huge hit. At the time, platformer games were becoming less popular as players started preferring shooting and open-world games. The Xbox was also becoming known for games like Halo, which meant there wasn’t much space for games focused on a central character. The time when games like Mario and Banjo-Kazooie could guarantee sales was over, and other types of games were taking over.
Accessibility proved to be another hurdle for Blinx. While its time-bending gameplay was inventive, it was also quite complicated, particularly for younger gamers. The game required a lot of patience and trying different things, which may have made it less popular than simpler platforming games. Essentially, the very features that made Blinx special were also what held it back.
Following Blinx 2, the series ended without any further development or marketing. Over time, Blinx gained a dedicated fanbase who fondly remember the games, but it largely faded from view for newer players. It’s been twenty years since a new Blinx game was released, a surprisingly long gap for a character once intended to be the face of Xbox. The series wasn’t discontinued because of poor performance, but because the gaming industry changed.
Is There a Future for Blinx?
Things have changed a lot lately. 3D platformer games are becoming popular again, fueled by people remembering how much they loved them and a growing desire for fun, creative gameplay. The popularity of Astro Bot shows that players still want cheerful, character-focused games with unique ideas, and that definitely applies to Blinx and its games.
There’s a growing excitement around the potential for a Blinx comeback. The game’s unique time-bending gameplay feels fresh and could really shine with today’s technology, which allows for smoother performance and better explanations. A remake or continuation could improve on the original concepts, making them easier to pick up without sacrificing the game’s complexity. Considering how intricate modern games are, players would likely find the mechanics in the original Blinx games more straightforward.
Microsoft is increasingly looking back at its older games, even those that weren’t huge hits. Bringing back a beloved but forgotten game like Blinx: The Time Sweeper could excite longtime fans and introduce a new audience to a unique and imaginative Xbox title. It’s not a matter of if Blinx deserves a revival, but who will make it happen. With the gaming world now more open to creative and colorful games, the timing might be perfect for Blinx to return and remind players what made the series special.
