The Last of Us season 2 release window confirmed by HBO boss

As a hardcore gamer and binge-watcher who’s weathered countless apocalyptic scenarios, I must say, the news of The Last of Us Season 2 hitting our screens in early 2025 has me more excited than a hoarder at a garage sale!

According to Casey Bloys, the executive at HBO, The Last of Us series will make a comeback during the first part of 2025.

He didn’t provide an exact date for the show’s release, but he shared with Deadline that “for now, I can only say” that both The Last of Us and the new season of The White Lotus are expected to premiere in the “roughly [first part of] the year”.

He added that he expects them to be released “in the Emmy window” – which suggest that both shows will arrive before the end of May, which tends to be the cut-off point for Emmy eligibility.

In May, HBO revealed initial photographs for season 2, featuring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey resuming their roles in the post-apocalyptic series. Later in August, they unveiled the first preview trailer for the upcoming episodes.

The footage opened with an undisclosed new character played by Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) asking Joel (Pascal): “What did you do?”

In our next installment, we’ll draw inspiration from the 2020 sequel game, set five years after the initial storyline. It commences with Joel and Ellie, now more settled, living in Wyoming.

The new run will be slightly shorter than the first – consisting of seven episodes instead of nine – but Craig Mazin revealed that it won’t be covering the entirety of the second game, so fans needn’t worry about the show compressing the game’s story.

Filming for the second season concluded a month ago, and HBO’s Bloys has officially announced that we can expect its return in early 2025 – so, not much longer until we can enjoy it again!
