Agatha All Along Teases a Young Avengers Debut - and It's Not Who You Think

As a long-time Marvel fanatic who has spent countless hours poring over comic books and binging through MCU movies and series, I must say that the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Agatha All Along, has truly piqued my interest. The introduction of new characters and potential Young Avengers is always a thrilling prospect, and this show seems to be setting up some intriguing possibilities.

Thanks to the initial two episodes of “Agatha All Along”, we now have a glimpse into another character likely to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a member of the Young Avengers. Kathryn Hahn delivers an outstanding performance in “Agatha All Along”, but it’s not until Joe Locke’s unnamed Teen character steps in that the plot truly gains momentum, helping Agatha gather a coven to follow the Witches’ Path. This Teen is an ardent fan of Agatha, making him quite thrilled about working with his idol. Many viewers are already theorizing that this Teen could be an older version of Billy, who is Wanda Maximoff’s son in “WandaVision” and will likely become a Young Avenger known as Wiccan. However, what fans might not have foreseen was the introduction of one of Wiccan’s potential teammates from the Young Avengers within “Agatha All Along”.

Warning: Spoilers for Agatha All Along beyond this point!

In Episode 2 of “Agatha All Along,” titled “Circle Sewn With Fate / Unlock Thy Hidden Gate,” character Agatha (played by Kathryn Hahn) and companion Teen (Joe Locke) travel through Westview, seeking a few witches to join their coven for a trip on the Witches’ Road. Just before they depart for their first destination, Teen receives a call from someone identified as “Boyf” with Blackhand’s “On My Mind” as his ringtone. The camera moves down to reveal this person, another teenager with light-brown skin and curly black hair. Teen politely declines the call, explaining to Agatha, “I apologize, but he frets over me.” Then they continue their discussion as normal.

In this seemingly ordinary scene, there might be significance hidden from viewers. If indeed the character portrayed as Agatha All Along’s Teen is Billy Kaplan, also known as Wiccan, then the concerned boyfriend could very well be Teddy Altman, better recognized as Hulkling of the Young Avengers.

Who is Hulkling?

2005 marked the first appearance of Hulkling in Young Avengers #1, alongside characters like Wiccan, Iron Lad, Patriot, and Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye. This comic series unfolded following “Avengers: Disassembled,” a time when Earth’s mightiest heroes were no longer a united team. Each member of the Young Avengers was essentially an iconic Avenger’s counterpart, with Hulkling serving as a substitute for the Hulk. However, it was later revealed that Hulkling is actually the son of Skrull princess Anelle and Kree warrior Captain Mar-Vell, making him half-Skrull and half-Kree. This unique biological heritage enables Hulkling to shape-shift, a power derived from his Skrull lineage.

During their time together in the Young Avengers, Wiccan and Hulkling formed a relationship, marking one of the more open gay relationships within the Marvel Universe. In the storyline known as Empyre, Hulkling embraced his destiny as the foretold ruler for both the Skrulls and Kree, culminating in him assuming the position of Emperor Dorrek-Vell. The narrative also saw the highly anticipated marriage between Hulkling and Wiccan unfold.

Is Agatha All Along setting up the Young Avengers?

Agatha All Along Teases a Young Avengers Debut - and It's Not Who You Think

If Agatha All Along is hinting at the Young Avengers, it would become another Marvel series on Disney+ and movie that has subtly introduced these characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. WandaVision introduced fans to the twins Billy (Wiccan) and Tommy (Speed), while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier featured Eli Bradley (Patriot). Loki included Kid Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had America Chavez, Hawkeye saw Kate Bishop team up with Clint Barton, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania introduced Ant-Man’s daughter Cassie Lang (Stature/Stinger), and now it appears that Teddy (Hulkling) might be in Agatha All Along.

In the mid-credits sequence of “The Marvels”, the setup for the Young Avengers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe was further developed as Ms. Marvel visited New York to enlist Kate Bishop, hinting at the formation of a new team much like Nick Fury did in the initial “Iron Man” film. Ms. Marvel even mentioned Cassie Lang during her conversation with Kate Bishop, suggesting a possible role for her in this group.

In the comics, Ms. Marvel hasn’t officially been part of the Young Avengers team, but she could easily join the MCU version. Moreover, given her role in recruitment, she might even become their leader. Interestingly, a similar team to which she belonged in the comics, called Champions, consisted of Miles Morales, Nova (Sam Alexander), Ironheart, Brawn, Power Man, Patriot, Falcon (Joaquin Torres from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World), and Vision’s daughter Viv.

Although Marvel isn’t currently publishing a “Young Avengers” comic, they have announced a new series called “New Champions” that features a fresh team of young and teenage superheroes.

The first two episodes of Agatha All Along are now streaming on Disney+.
