As a longtime fan of both Kyle Chandler‘s captivating performances and the Green Lantern universe, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of seeing him don the iconic green ring as Hal Jordan. With his extensive background in portraying complex characters, from the stoic Coach Taylor to the resilient astronaut Deke Slayton, Chandler is undoubtedly equipped to bring a unique and compelling take on the Green Lantern.
Kyle Chandler, known for his Emmy-winning role as Eric Taylor on Friday Night Lights, will transition from that series’ light to becoming Green Lantern’s Hal Jordan in DC and HBO’s Lanterns. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is set to don the ring with casting currently underway and directors being hired for the upcoming live-action series, scheduled to begin shooting in Atlanta in January 2025.
As a gaming enthusiast, I recently got wind of the news that Chandler’s role in the upcoming project has been confirmed, following reports that Josh Brolin, who starred in both ‘Avengers’ and ‘Dune’, allegedly turned down the part. This intriguing detective-style series, produced by James Gunn (Superman) and Peter Safran (Aquaman), for DC Studios, features a test pilot transformed into a space cop. I can hardly wait to see how it unfolds!
The live-action Green Lantern TV show got the go-ahead in June, with Chris Mundy, known for his work on Netflix’s Ozark, serving as the showrunner and executive producer. He will also collaborate as a co-writer with Damon Lindelof from HBO’s Watchmen and The Leftovers, along with Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Tom King, who has contributed to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
In my role as a gamer, I’d say: Last year when the series was announced, DC Studios co-chairman and CEO Gunn described Lanterns as “a terrestrial mystery intertwined with our larger story across movies and TV shows.” Essentially, we uncover an ancient terror on Earth, and these Green Lanterns are like supercops in a world called ‘Precinct Earth.’ As the Green Lanterns of Sector 2814, Jordan and his apprentice, John Stewart – another human with a power ring – are assigned by the Green Lantern Corps to probe a strange danger that might connect with Gunn’s Superman, as well as the upcoming films like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Swamp Thing.
A new adaptation of the cancelled Green Lanterns TV series, initially conceived by Greg Berlanti, is influenced to some extent by the “Sinestro’s Law” storyline that began in the 2016 Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps: Rebirth one-shot and issues #1-7 of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. In this narrative, the oppressive Sinestro and his Yellow Lantern followers establish dominance over the cosmos.
John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC Comics’ most captivating figures, and the series ‘Lanterns’ breathes life into them as they star in an exclusive detective tale that is pivotal to the new DC Universe we’re introducing next summer, starting with ‘Superman’,” Gunn and Safran stated upon the series announcement. The new DC Universe begins in December with the Max original animated series ‘Creature Commandos’, created and written by Gunn, followed by the official launch of Gunn’s ‘Superman’ film in July 2025.
Apart from his five-season stint as Coach Taylor on Friday Night Lights, Chandler has also made appearances in various TV shows such as ABC’s Homefront, Early Edition, Bloodline, Grey’s Anatomy, Catch-22, and Super Pumped. His film credits include portraying astronaut Deke Slayton in First Man (2018), and roles in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, and several other movies that have won Oscars.
