As a seasoned gamer with decades of combat under my belt, I must admit that the revelation from NetherRealm Studios has left me both intrigued and eagerly anticipating the future. The fact that they’ve been working on their next game for three years now is simply mind-blowing! It’s like watching a martial artist in slow motion – every move, every punch, every kick, all leading to the next epic battle.
For approximately three years, the team at NetherRealm Studios has been working on their project following “Mortal Kombat 1” to some extent. Starting this week, we’re moving into Year 2 of “MK1”, marked by the launch of the story expansion titled “Khaos Reigns”. Following this, there are still a few DLC fighters lined up for “MK1”, such as Ghostface, the T-1000 Terminator, and Conan the Barbarian. Whether or not these will be the final major content additions for “MK1” remains to be seen, but the developers have already got plans for what they’ll do next in the future.
In a conversation with ComicBook, Boon shared that NetherRealm Studios made a decision on their next game title approximately three years ago. Since the process of creating games often requires making decisions well ahead of time, and to ensure there’s always work for different studio members, NetherRealm chose its sequel to Mortal Kombat 1 before the original even hit the shelves.
Boon mentioned that we usually begin brainstorming for the following game even before finishing the current one. It’s not like we sit back and ponder about the next move once the game is over; there’s a multitude of tasks, studies, and planning to be done well in advance. In fact, we had decided on our next project three years ago, and since then, a team has been working on it to some extent.
Beyond this statement, Boon didn’t share any further insights about the specifics of the project. However, before the introduction of MK1, Boon hinted that he aspired to revisit the Injustice series someday. After Mortal Kombat 11, many fans speculated that NetherRealm would develop Injustice 3 next. Instead, they released Mortal Kombat 1, which has only intensified the clamor for Injustice 3.
Regardless of whether NetherRealm decides to develop Injustice 3 next, we probably won’t hear about it until 2025, 2026, or possibly later. On the other hand, their most recent project, Mortal Kombat 1: Reign of Chaos, is set for release tomorrow, September 24th, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
