Malakai Black’s AEW Contract Expiring Much Sooner Than Expected

Malakai Black's AEW Contract Expiring Much Sooner Than Expected

As a dedicated fan who has followed Malakai Black’s journey since his days in NXT, I must say it’s been quite a rollercoaster ride. From his electrifying debut in AEW to his turbulent times off-screen, Malakai has managed to captivate audiences with his enigmatic persona and in-ring prowess.

Malakai Black has now been with All Elite Wrestling for over three years. As leader of The House of Black, he made his AEW debut in July 2021 by attacking Cody Rhodes and igniting a fiery summer-long rivalry between them. In their initial matchup, Black swiftly defeated Rhodes, claiming victory with just one foot on Rhodes’ chest within minutes. However, the following months did not maintain Black’s momentum, even though he gained some renewed energy by guiding Brody King and Buddy Matthews as part of The House of Black. Unfortunately, Black has yet to rekindle the spark that characterized his early days in the company.

Malakai Black could be on his way out of AEW.

Based on reports from Wrestling Inc’s founder Raj Giri, it appears my AEW contract is due for renewal sometime early next year. AEW has expressed interest in re-signing me, but there seems to be significant attention from other sources as well. Previously, AEW President Tony Khan mentioned that I was on a five-year deal signed back in 2022. As a fan and a part of the AEW family, I’m hopeful for the future and eager to see what lies ahead!

As a devoted fan, I’ve heard whispers for quite some time about Black’s dissatisfaction with AEW. In the thick of 2022, he made a formal request for his release, leading many to believe he was leaving the company following AEW All Out 2022. However, instead of parting ways, he decided to take a break and reevaluate his path within the organization.

In his statement from September 2022, Black expressed that he had requested his release, mentioning that the past two years have been filled with numerous obstacles. He hinted at sharing more details about what transpired in a future conversation, preferably on a different medium, once he’s had time to better understand and process those events. For now, he wants everyone to know that he is doing well and is taking some time, for the first time in 22 years, to rebalance his life over the past two decades.

Three months after his return to coding, he aimed for the AEW World Trios Championships. After some time, he successfully claimed those titles with his fellow group members Brody King and Buddy Matthews by overcoming Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks in a challenging battle. Since then, he and House of Black have been consistently featured in AEW’s weekly shows. Notably, they recently engaged in a personal feud against Adam Copeland and took part in a multi-competitor ladder match at the AEW ALL IN: London event.

Before joining AEW, Black gained mainstream recognition in WWE. He spent five years fighting for Vince McMahon, becoming a key figure during the popular Takeover era of NXT. However, his main roster stint didn’t meet expectations and he was let go by WWE a week after debuting his “Dark Father” persona.
