As a lifelong fan who has admired Naomi Campbell for her iconic struts down the runway and her trailblazing career, it’s truly disheartening to see such a revered figure embroiled in this scandal. Due to misuse of funds within the charity organization Fashion for Relief, which she co-founded in 2005, a renowned model has been barred from participating in charitable activities in England and Wales over the next five years.
An investigation by the Charity Commission for England and Wales on September 26th found that Campbell, along with her fellow trustees Bianka Hellmich and Veronica Chou, had engaged in repeated instances of wrongdoing or poor management. As a result, both Campbell and Hellmich have been prohibited from participating in charitable activities for nine years, while Chou has been barred for four years.
According to a public report shared on their website, the Commission revealed that from April 2016 to July 2022, only 8.5% of the charity’s total spending went towards charitable grants. The report also pointed out that in May 2018, trustees spent approximately $19,800 on a flight from London to Nice for a fundraising event, which included Campbell’s personal expenses such as €9,400 on hotel accommodations, and an extra $10,700 on spa treatments, room service, cigarettes, and other hotel goods – all paid for by the charity.
The board members of Fashion for Relief explained to the investigation that spending on hotels and travel was a “smart financial decision” and usually paid for by a charity donor. However, the inquiry found no proof presented by the board that such payments were made by the donor, nor could they find any corresponding donations from the donor in the charity’s financial records during their review.
As stated by the Charity Commission, Fashion for Relief – an organization previously listed on their charity registry – was initially established with a mission to alleviate poverty, promote health, and enhance education. They achieved this goal by distributing funds to charities or other organizations, as well as providing resources directly to those in need.
The commission’s investigation revealed that unapproved payments worth approximately £290,000 for consultancy services were made to trustee Bianka Hellmich, a violation of the charity’s constitution. However, it was acknowledged in their ruling that she had voluntarily proposed returning these funds, which amount to around $388,000.
As for Campbell, she has stated that she was “extremely concerned” by the findings.
