Shrinking creator explains how season 1 reaction changed season 2 plans

As a seasoned movie-goer with a penchant for comedy-dramas and a soft spot for ensemble casts, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the return of Shrinking on Apple TV+! The fact that the creators have chosen to expand the world of the show based on the positive response from the audience and the exceptional performances of their talented cast members is a testament to their adaptability and keen understanding of what makes great television.

Jason Segel’s comedy-drama series “Shrinking,” available on Apple TV+, is coming back for its second season. Although the show’s co-creators had already mapped out many aspects of this new season before the first one aired, the response to season 1 did influence some changes.

Lawrence mentioned, “Indeed, there are two points I’d like to share. Firstly, we’ve been incredibly fortunate as I’ve often stated, my profession involves celebrating others’ talents, and I am deeply appreciative of it. While I can pen a few words, I lack the skills that many of these talented individuals possess. The transformations in the show are mainly credited to the cast, particularly Ted McGinley.

Initially, we viewed him as a casual comedian who’d occasionally grace our show with witty one-liners. However, when he appeared as a guest star last year, the audience’s reaction was overwhelmingly positive, so much so that he’s now a permanent character. Consequently, we had to create a history, personality, and role for someone we hadn’t anticipated would play such a significant part in our series.

He went on saying: “Firstly, this point, and secondly, a rather freeing aspect for our writers – it could be reasonable for both Harrison Ford and Jason Segel to express their desire for the series to primarily focus on them.

However, the ensemble was not just accepted by them, but they were astonished to see that the young actors, Luke Tennie and Lukita Maxwell, who portray Alice and Sean, held their own alongside these well-known comedians and legends.

Initially, we didn’t plan on making their world and stories a part of ours. However, Sean served as a catalyst last year as a patient, and this year, we find ourselves delving deeper into his life. This wasn’t forced; it was earned, and it reflects our efforts to focus on what seems effective in our interaction.

In the show, McGinley portrays Derek, who is married to Liz (played by Christa Miller). Meanwhile, Tennie takes on the role of Sean, both a patient and roommate of Jimmy’s character, and Maxwell acts as Jimmy’s daughter.

In addition to the previously mentioned actors, Jessica Williams and Michael Urie are set to reprise their significant roles, while co-creator and Ted Lasso actor Brett Goldstein has been confirmed for a special guest appearance – the details of his role remain unclear at this point.

Season 2 of Shrinking will debut worldwide on Wednesday, 16th October, exclusively on Apple TV+. Two episodes will be released simultaneously, followed by a new episode every Wednesday until December 25th, 2024. Don’t forget to subscribe to Apple TV+ here to catch all the action!
