The Rings of Power star reveals what’s next for Sauron after season 2 finale

As a seasoned film enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic villains, I must say that Sauron’s journey in The Rings of Power is proving to be one of the most captivating and intriguing. After witnessing the events unfold in the gripping season 2 finale, it’s clear that our malevolent antagonist has a lot more up his (metaphorical) sleeve.

*Warning: Spoilers for The Rings of Power season 2 episode 8 ahead.*

Following the climactic end of The Rings of Power Season 2, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease knowing that Sauron, my character in this epic tale, is far from content. As Charlie Vickers, who brings this enigmatic figure to life, shares insights into what lies ahead for the villain, I find myself eagerly anticipating the twists and turns that await us all in the next chapter of Middle-earth’s captivating story.

In the last part of episode 8 of season 2, Morfydd Clark’s character, Galadriel, successfully stopped Sauron from taking her ring, Nenya, away from her.

As Sauron inflicted harm upon her, Elrond (Robert Aramayo) was able to rescue her. With the Elves awakening within their haven, Rivendell, they chose, for the first time, to engage in combat against Sauron, taking the battle directly to him.

It’s interesting, since he’s been instrumental in causing much of the turmoil, yet I believe he understands that the ultimate goal of striving for perfection might require us to endure such a phase before everything can be truly perfect.

It seems quite likely that he’s aware of an impending conflict, given that we’re talking about the War of Elves and Sauron here – a war which, being part of this series, appears inevitable.

It seems to me that he possesses a strong drive for perfection, and dislikes Elves intensely. If he believes absolute perfection can only be achieved by eliminating hindrances, then it’s likely he’s prepared for confrontation.

In the season 2 finale, Sauron engages in one significant conflict – a battle against Galadriel. Vickers muses: “I believe it’s his overconfidence and excessive pride that blind him. I think he struggles to comprehend her defiance, her choice not to yield to him and join forces.

In that fight, he initially assumed she was no match for him, finding it relatively easy at first. However, she didn’t give up and continued to push back, forcing him to significantly increase his effort in order to finally overcome her.

I believe he’s feeling both anger and grudging admiration, as she seems to be a formidable opponent indeed.

He might end the season pondering, “Apparently, I can’t always get my own way. I desire to rule everything, but there are aspects of this world beyond my grasp, and I must discover a means to manage them.” As for how he plans to do that, it remains to be seen, perhaps by acquiring the three Elven rings in time, but I suspect it’s something left undone.

Throughout the series, there will be a constant interplay between him and Galadriel, as they embody the struggle between righteousness and corruption.

Although the third season of the series has not been officially announced, Vickers is eager to proceed with the narrative of Sauron, focusing on significant events drawn from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original lore.

“I haven’t been told anything about where the show is going, and that’s honest,” he said.

However, when I consider all the supplementary materials like appendices and Rings of Power, it becomes clear there are stories the show will need to unfold. I’m thrilled about the portrayal of Numenor’s fall – witnessing Sauron performing rituals where he sacrifices bodies in his temple to the gods, and then the destruction of the city by a massive wave is an image that truly grips me.

I’d eagerly anticipate it if the series decided to tell that tale, and I truly hope I get the chance to be involved.
