Ranma 1/2 Remake Debuts With New English Dub Cast

As a seasoned gamer and long-time anime enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of the medium since its inception, I can honestly say that the return of iconic franchises like Ranma 1/2 is nothing short of exhilarating! With over three decades under my belt, I’ve seen the rise and fall (and sometimes the rise again) of countless anime series, but none have quite captured my heart like Rumiko Takahashi’s masterpieces.

The classic anime series “Ranma 1/2” is back on screens this fall with a fresh remake! To accompany its return, a new English dub has been introduced featuring a whole new cast. Renowned manga artist Rumiko Takahashi, known for hits like “Inuyasha” and “Urusei Yatsura”, has seen many of her popular series resurface in recent years with brand new projects. With publisher Shogakukan celebrating its centennial anniversary, Takahashi’s iconic works have been coming back with sequels, reboots, remakes and more. This fall marks the launch of another major project from this creative lineage.

Initially introduced in the comic strips of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday back in 1984, Ranma 1/2 subsequently inspired two distinct anime adaptations several years later. The story continued with numerous OVA specials and movies, and now returns with a fresh new anime series. Similar to the Urusei Yatsura remake that came before it, this new Ranma 1/2 presents a unique reinterpretation of Rumiko Takahashi’s popular manga from scratch. As part of the Fall 2024 anime lineup, the initial episode of this fresh take is now airing. In conjunction with its premiere, a new ensemble for the English dub has been unveiled as well.

What to Know for Ranma 1/2 Remake

In the upcoming season, starting this Fall, “Ranma 1/2” will be available for streaming exclusively on Netflix, offering both subtitled and dubbed versions. Konosuke Uda is directing the latest anime adaptation by MAPPA, with Kimiko Ueno penning the scripts, Hiromi Taniguchi designing the characters, and Kaoru Wada composing the music. The plot of the series remains consistent as it follows Ranma Saotome, a young martial artist who was previously training with his father in China before making the journey to Japan.

Following their training at Junsekyo, which was surrounded by lakes tainted by the spirits of those who drowned there, both Ranma and his father underwent unique transformations upon falling into these cursed waters. Ranma morphs into a girl when coming into contact with cold water, whereas his father is transformed into a panda. However, due to a commitment to marry the daughter of their friend, Akane, Ranma finds himself in a predicament where he must cohabit with his future spouse while also experiencing frequent gender swaps through a series of bizarre and entertaining incidents involving an extensive group of characters.
