2025 was an incredible year for gaming, particularly for independent developers. While there’s been some debate about whether games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 truly qualify as indie titles, and popular sequels such as Hades 2 and Hollow Knight: Silksong received a lot of attention, it was the fresh, original games that really stood out. Titles like Ball x Pit, Dispatch, Absolum, and Despelote helped make 2025 a truly memorable year for innovative games and new developers.
I was totally blown away by Blue Prince this year – it’s a really atmospheric puzzle game that just grabbed me. It was such a strong first game, and a lot of us were hoping for a direct sequel. The creator recently said a straight sequel isn’t happening, but honestly, the way he explained it actually got me excited! He’s thinking about a new game that builds on the same world, but isn’t tied down by needing to be exactly what we expect from a sequel. I think that could be even more creative!
Blue Prince Creator Doesn’t Think There Needs To Be A Sequel

Blue Prince, created by Dogubomb, is a captivating puzzle game where you explore a huge mansion to find a hidden 46th room. As you navigate the building, you’ll face tricky challenges, dead ends, and puzzles that make the search difficult. Playing as Simon P. Jones, you’ll uncover the secrets of the world of Mora, learn about his mother’s past, and discover how it all connects to a fight against the oppressive government controlling the land.
Designer Tonda Ros spent eight years developing Blue Prince, a deeply personal project that drew inspiration from various sources, including video games, Kit Williams’ book Masquerade, and the card game Magic: The Gathering. Though critics have praised the game and it’s become a standout indie title this year, Ros currently has no plans to create a direct sequel.
I was really excited about Blue Prince, and I’m definitely curious about what happens with Simon! But the creator, Ros, has explained that while they might revisit that same world in future games, each one will tell a completely new story. They mentioned Myst and Riven as games that do this well, and honestly, it makes a lot of sense. It’s a little sad not getting more Simon right away, but as a fan, I think it’s a really smart and exciting direction for Ros as a creator!
Blue Princes Doesn’t Need A Sequel

I was totally blown away when Blue Prince came out earlier this year! It really came out of nowhere, and everyone was talking about it – critics loved it, and players like me were obsessed. It quickly became one of my favorite games of the year, so naturally, I’m already hoping for a sequel! The ending definitely hinted at a lot more story to tell, with Simon taking the throne and becoming the Blue Prince. Considering how popular the game is, a follow-up seems like a no-brainer!
As a fan of Blue Prince‘s unique style, this news is really exciting. A direct sequel would naturally be measured against the original game, which was a huge indie hit. But by creating a follow-up that’s connected to Blue Prince in spirit rather than directly in story, Dogubomb has the freedom to make something truly new. This allows the creative team, led by Ros, to take bigger risks and innovate without being constrained by expectations for a traditional sequel.
This game lets Blue Prince build on the traditions of the puzzle games that influenced it, creating a broader, more expansive world instead of focusing on a single, contained story. The developer could easily bring back the character Simon in a future game, continuing his storyline either as a central focus or subtly in the background. Alternatively, a sequel set in the same world but with a new protagonist could really highlight the consequences of the first game’s ending and how it changed things.
Although a direct sequel would probably need to focus on Simon, a wider continuation of the story could explore other aspects of the world and expand on the themes introduced by his discoveries. This gives the developers more creative freedom. Players still have plenty to discover as they revisit and explore the Mt. Holly Estate. Blue Prince has been a major indie hit this year, and it’s great to see that any follow-up will aim to be just as innovative and fresh.
