Jennifer Saunders recalls Absolutely Fabulous scenes male execs didn’t approve of

As someone who grew up watching Absolutely Fabulous, I can confidently say that Jennifer Saunders and her team were trailblazers in British comedy. The show was more than just a hilarious portrayal of outrageous antics; it was a bold statement about women’s roles in society, breaking barriers and setting new standards.

Jennifer Saunders disclosed an aspect of “Absolutely Fabulous” that made certain male executives uneasy, as she prepares for a documentary special discussing the enduring influence of this iconic television series.

ABC: Saunders and Joanna Lumley played the roles of Eddie, a PR executive, and Patsy, a fashion director, in this series. Over five seasons on TV and a hit movie, their humorous escapades kept the country amused.

Viewers eagerly anticipate reminiscing about the prestigious event in Absolutely Fabulous: Inside Out, an upcoming special by Gold, set to air on October 17th, which is cherished not only by those involved but also by some well-known admirers.

In the most recent edition of TopMob magazine, Saunders reminisced about the debut of the program, saying, “Initially, it aired on BBC Two, which was somewhat similar to Channel 4 back then – you had some leeway to experiment a bit. There wasn’t much hype or anticipation surrounding it.

She went on to reveal that “some male execs weren’t that impressed by women being drunk… but the show got audiences”.

In truth, the eccentric behavior of Eddie and Patsy was what captivated audiences for over two decades, yet it’s important to note that their co-star, Jane Horrocks, admitted that they stirred up criticism from certain quarters as well.

Reflecting on it now, Horrocks commented on how courageous it was to have a predominantly female cast in the production. Additionally, he noted that the unconventional “laddish” behavior displayed wasn’t usually accepted, as he felt audiences might not have been accustomed to seeing such behavior from women before.

Nevertheless, Saunders made it clear that the groundbreaking aspect of the show wasn’t deliberate. Instead, she explained, “It wasn’t something we planned – we were merely aiming for humor and portraying characters who truly lived within that setting.

Eddie and Patsy weren’t intended to serve as role models; instead, we aimed to provoke a slight sense of shock in the audience!

Fellow actor Joanna Lumley agreed, commenting: “It’s endured due to the fact that people adore laughter, and those two horrid ladies offered the largest palette for humor.

To me, the rehearsal spaces we shared with Jane, Julia, and the cherished June Whitfield felt like the most joyful spots on the planet.

Nowadays, wherever I find myself, champagne is being handed to me, all due to Jennifer’s efforts, as well as Edina and Patsy’s love for Bollywood! Here’s to you, darling ladies!
